Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> is being urged by Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal to boot right-wing media outlet Newsmax from the Taxi TV monitors that appear in the backseats of thousands of yellow cabs.<\/p>\n

Hoylman-Sigal claimed that Newsmax <\/a>\u201cis not a credible news source for New Yorkers,\u201d in a January 21 letter to Mamdani and Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Midori Valdivia.<\/p>\n

Newsmax streams national news programming content in taxis in a partnership with Curbed, one of the TLC\u2019s authorized technology screen providers.<\/p>\n

Hoylman-Sigal is urging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to use his political muscle to get Newsmax booted. Christopher Sadowski<\/p>\n

But New Yorkers deserve a better news source than Newsmax on Taxi TV, the borough president argued, questioning some of the comments on immigration from hosts on the conservative network.<\/p>\n

He urged the mayor and TLC to use political muscle to pressure Curb to drop Newsmax, or suspend the city\u2019s licensing deal with Curb.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge you to summarily suspend the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission\u2019s partnership with Curb\u2026 and demand that Curb cease its collaboration with Newsmax as a condition of licensure given the platform\u2019s history of misinformation and disingenuous reporting,\u201d Hoylman-Sigal said in the letter.<\/p>\n

Critics slammed Hoylman-Sigal for promoting censorship, calling his demand an example of cancel culture run amok.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is cancel culture in the free market,\u201d said Stefano Forte, president of the New York Republican Club.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the socialists want to control everything. But this is ridiculous. I don\u2019t think anyone is getting indoctrinated by right wing politics in the back of the cab.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holyman-Signal sent a letter to Mamdani, TLC Commissioner Midori Valdivia, claiming Newsmax \u201cis not a credible news source for New Yorkers.\u201d @gocurb \/ X<\/p>\n

The Post reviewed a recent Newsmax \u201cNews Minute\u201d presentation on Taxi TV by host Alex Kraemer. <\/p>\n

The segment showed a straightforward presentation about congressional deliberations over a war powers resolution for Venezuela, the Trump administration\u2019s crackdown of visas and a story about an ex-Giants football player who\u2019d gone missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the launch of our Newsmax partnership, no opinion or editorial content has aired on TaxiTV. All programming has consisted solely of standard news segments reviewed to ensure compliance with our content standards,\u201d a Curb spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Curb also noted that it regularly airs public service announcements from the Mamdani administration and other public agencies, \u201creinforcing our role as a neutral distribution platform for important civic and safety-related information.\u201d<\/p>\n

The borough president believes New Yorkers deserve a higher-quality news source than Newsmax and wants Mamdani to force Curbed to either eliminate Newsmax or suspend its deal with Curbed. Kara McCurdy\/Mayoral Photography Office<\/p>\n

The company provides content <\/a>streamed on 15,000 screens across 65 US markets, including 9,000 in the Big Apple.<\/p>\n
