multi-day fire<\/a> at a Town of Lyme solar farm back in 2023.<\/p>\n\u201cThe toxic chemicals that go along with a battery fire could be dangerous to human health at a very low 30 parts per million. At those levels, you can\u2019t taste it. You can\u2019t smell it. You don\u2019t know that it\u2019s there,\u201d said Walczyk.<\/p>\n
Acker argued that precautions would be in place at any battery storage facility and stressed the reliability of the technology. <\/p>\n
\u201cTexas already has more batteries deployed than our entire goal of 6 gigawatts. You haven\u2019t heard of a single one there, so there are rare events,\u201d said Acker.<\/p>\n
But Walczyk says that explanation doesn\u2019t cut it. <\/p>\n
\u201cLyme only has one battery facility, and so far that facility has caught fire,\u201d said Walczyk.<\/p>\n
Instead, he\u2019d like to see the state take a different path. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m saying full brake on all of this. Let\u2019s do some things that we know will work. Let\u2019s take the taxes and fees and things off of people\u2019s energy bills now, and let\u2019s finally drive down the price of energy in New York,\u201d said Walczyk.<\/p>\n
Since 2023, lithium-ion battery storage facilities have caught fire on four separate occasions in New York State. <\/p>\n
