STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An outpouring of support is being extended to victims of a massive blaze that destroyed two homes in Great Kills <\/a>late Friday into Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The fire at 250 Elverton Ave., a dead-end street off Leverett Avenue in Great Kills, ignited around 11:23 p.m. Friday, according to a FDNY spokesperson.<\/p>\n

Flames tore through a 2.5-story private dwelling as well as the neighboring home, according to sources. The fire appears to have caused a partial collapse of one of the homes. One civilian and two firefighters were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the FDNY said. <\/p>\n

Sources identified the civilian injured in the fire as a man in his 80s. The neighboring family displaced by the fire consists of a family of four with two daughters, ages 7 and 10, the source said.<\/p>\n

As of Saturday afternoon, neighbors said an FDNY truck remained parked outside the homes. The cause of this fire remains under investigation, the FDNY said.<\/p>\n

Members of the community, including South Shore Republican Councilmember Frank Morano, have offered support to the families displaced by the fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast night\u2019s fire was devastating, and our hearts go out to the families who lost their homes and to everyone who was injured,\u201d said Morano, who is collecting gift cards and donations for the families impacted by the fire. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly grateful to the FDNY and all first responders who worked in freezing conditions to protect lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morano said his office is coordinating with various city agencies to make sure the displaced families receive housing assistance and immediate support.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019re organizing a gift-card drive to help them get through the days ahead. Staten Islanders always step up for their neighbors, and I\u2019m proud of the way this community comes together in moments like this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Morano said gift cards for grocery stores and clothing, school supply and other retailers can be dropped off to his office, located at 2955 Veterans Rd. West, Staten Island, NY 10309., from Monday to Thursday this coming week.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure everything is distributed properly, gift cards must be logged through our office, and we will not be accepting clothing or used items. Thank you to the neighbors who opened their homes and helped one another in the middle of the night. This is Staten Island at its best, even in the worst moments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The devastating blaze was one of two that ignited on Staten Island overnight from Friday into Saturday. As firefighters battled the Great Kills emergency, another fire broke out at 385 Bard Ave. off Castleton Avenue in West Brighton around 1:14 a.m. Firefighters responded to this emergency, which saw flames extend throughout the two-story home and its attic.<\/p>\n
