Pennsylvania\u2019s groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, will make his annual prediction from Gobbler\u2019s Knob in western Pennsylvania. <\/p>\n
Fans can watch the ceremony live on VisitPa.com<\/a> beginning around 6 a.m., with Phil\u2019s forecast expected shortly after sunrise at about 7:07 a.m.<\/a><\/p>\n On Groundhog Day, if the groundhog sees his shadow and returns underground, he\u2019s predicting six more weeks of winter are on the way. If the groundhog remains above ground on a cloudy day and doesn\u2019t see his shadow, then we can expect an early spring, according to groundhog lore.<\/p>\n Punxsutawney Phil\u2019s accuracy<\/p>\n StormFax Weather Almanac<\/a> reports Phil\u2019s forecast accuracy rate of 39% for over 135 years. <\/p>\n During a 29-year span<\/a> from 1988 to 2017, Phil was accurate 13 times, according to the data. Although some years were considered mixed, with colder-than-average temperatures in February followed by warmer-than-average conditions in March.<\/p>\n Over the course of 137 years, from 1887 to 2024, Phil predicted extended winters 107 and early springs 21 times, according to the numbers. Records of Phil\u2019s prediction for 10 years during that time were not reported. <\/p>\n Staten Island\u2019s own groundhog<\/p>\n For more than 130 years, Staten Island Chuck has predicted the season at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton.<\/p>\n Despite Phil\u2019s popularity and long history, Chuck has maintained an 85% accuracy rate since the start of his career, according to caretakers at the Staten Island Zoo<\/a>.<\/p>\n
