{"id":120207,"date":"2026-02-02T17:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/120207\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T17:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:06:09","slug":"ny-police-couldnt-partner-with-ice-under-govs-new-proposal-queens-daily-eagle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/120207\/","title":{"rendered":"NY police couldn\u2019t partner with ICE under gov\u2019s new proposal \u2014 Queens Daily Eagle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">By Noah Powelson<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday said that she would propose legislation that would prevent local police in New York from partnering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hochul, who said ICE had been \u201cunleashed on the American streets for the sole purpose of causing chaos, carnage and fear,\u201d announced she was backing a new bill called the \u201cLocal Cops, Local Crimes Act.\u201d The bill, according to the governor, would prevent federal immigration agents from partnering with New York police officers and utilizing their resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The bill would specifically ban 287(g) agreements, formal agreements between ICE and local law enforcement offices that allow local police officers and resources to be used in federal immigration operations. According to the governor\u2019s office, 14 New York law enforcement agencies across nine counties have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The bill, if passed, would void the current agreements. It would also prohibit federal agents from using local detention centers for civil immigration enforcement, mass raids or transporting detainees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cOver the last year federal immigration agents have carried out unspeakable acts of violence against Americans under the guise of public safety. These abuses \u2013 and the weaponization of local police officers for civil immigration enforcement \u2013 will not stand in New York,\u201d Hochul said in a statement. \u201cToday, I\u2019m announcing new actions that will safeguard our communities against dangerous federal overreach and ensure that New York law enforcement is focused on keeping New Yorkers safe \u2013 not doing the job of ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Local law officers can and will still cooperate with federal agents during criminal investigations under the bill, as well enforce crowd control during protests against federal operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Standing beside the governor on Friday were a number of state and city law enforcement leaders and district attorneys, including Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz and NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cLet me be clear, the NYPD does not engage in civil immigration enforcement, period,\u201d Tisch said. \u201cThat approach has never prevented us from working closely with federal partners \u2013 the FBI, the DEA, for example \u2013 on serious criminal matters\u2026that cooperation is important and it continues, and this legislation does not interfere with that work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The legislative announcement was welcomed by legal advocates, including the Legal Aid Society, which also called on the state legislature to pass the New York For All Act, a bill that would further restrict cooperation between local and federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cGovernor Hochul\u2019s proposed ban on 287(g) agreements that allow local law enforcement to collaborate with ICE is a welcome step toward protecting immigrant New Yorkers from harmful federal overreach,\u201d a spokesperson for the Legal Aid Society said in a statement. \u201cWhile New York City\u2019s existing sanctuary and detainer laws already prohibit such collaboration, this measure is a significant step for the rest of the state, affirming that New York celebrates and protects immigrant communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If Hochul\u2019s bill is passed, New York would join six other states that already have 287(g) agreement bans on the books, including California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Noah Powelson Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday said that she would propose legislation that would prevent local&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":120208,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[37],"tags":[9,24,63,122,124,123],"class_list":{"0":"post-120207","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-queens","8":"tag-new-york","9":"tag-new-york-city","10":"tag-nyc","11":"tag-queens","12":"tag-queens-headlines","13":"tag-queens-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/120207","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=120207"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/120207\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/120208"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=120207"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=120207"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=120207"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
