The three others were overdoses, Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The greatest danger posed by the sustained cold is to vulnerable New Yorkers who remain exposed to the elements,&#8221; he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani urged residents who are experiencing homelessness to go to shelters. The city has been in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/dangerously-cold-temperatures-on-wednesday-morning-prompts-code-blue-in-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Code Blue<\/a> since Jan. 19 because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/slight-relief-in-temperatures-but-it-will-get-colder-as-the-week-goes-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dangerously cold temperatures.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials are still waiting for the final results from the medical examiner&#8217;s office. Mamdani said it appears that none of the people who died were living in homeless encampments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shelters and mobile warming units remain open\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials opened new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2026\/01\/mayor-mamdani-and-dss-announce-new-single-room-shelter-units-in-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">single-room shelter units<\/a> on Sunday in Upper Manhattan as warming shelters remain open to anyone in the city. There are also 20 mobile\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.311.nyc.gov\/article\/?kanumber=KA-03702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warming units<\/a> across the five boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>The new units are designed for people who are reluctant to go indoors because they don&#8217;t want to share rooms or are skeptical of other options.  <\/p>\n<p>Mamdani said officials have made more than 930 placements in shelters or safe havens. Eighteen New Yorkers were involuntarily transported who were determined to be a danger to themselves or others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every single person will be cared for.
