{"id":120561,"date":"2026-02-02T21:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T21:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/120561\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T21:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T21:34:07","slug":"garbage-piles-up-on-nyc-streets-along-with-snow-as-storm-vexes-sanitation-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/120561\/","title":{"rendered":"Garbage piles up on NYC streets along with snow as storm vexes sanitation department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mounds of garbage have piled up on NYC streets as the city struggles with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/30\/when-will-cold-snap-end-nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">freezing temperatures<\/a> and piles of ever-more-disgusting snow.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Mamdani said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/weather\/weather-stories\/live-updates-snow-forecast-today-winter-storm\/6449084\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">garbage collection is running 24 hours behind schedule<\/a>, despite 2,500 sanitation workers on 12-hour shifts and 1,500 additional workers from across different city agencies who are working to clear bus stops, sidewalks and crosswalks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019m thankful to see is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/forms\/collection-schedule\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the pace of cleanup is increasing<\/a>, and I am hopeful that that continues to be the case across the five boroughs,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Sanitation has a \u201cSnow Alert,\u201d posted to its site: \u201cCollection is ongoing, but delays are possible due to the winter storm,\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Mayor Zohran Mamdani.\" width=\"5333\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Mayor-Zohran-Mamdani.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"8674085\" \/>Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks at the National Action Network during a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026  in Manhattan, New York.
