The King and Queen of Denmark\u2019s trip to the Baltic states continued last week in Lithuania, with Queen Mary wearing a special tiara from her personal collection for a state banquet.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, King Frederik X and Queen Mary arrived in Vilnius, where they were greeted at the Presidential Palace by President Gitanas Naus\u0117da and his wife, First Lady Diana Naus\u0117dien\u0117. Later in the day, Queen Mary and Mrs. Naus\u0117dien\u0117 made a visit to the Ukrainian Center in Vilnius, while King Frederik met with Prime Minister Inga Ruginien\u0117.<\/p>\n

With the suit, Mary kept her jewelry simple, wearing a classic pair of pearl earrings. Above, she admires the new decoration she received from the President, the Order of Vytautas the Great.<\/p>\n

The royal and presidential couples each wore their new decorations later that evening during the state banquet, which was hosted by the President and First Lady at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius. King Frederik and Queen Mary each wore the Order of Vytautas the Great (with the collar for the King), while President Naus\u0117da wore Denmark\u2019s Order of the Elephant and Mrs. Naus\u0117dien\u0117 wore the Order of the Dannebrog.<\/p>\n

Queen Mary also wore the King\u2019s Royal Portrait Order. I know some of you were discussing the size of the order in my article about the Estonian state banquet<\/a>. There\u2019s a reason for that. The diamond frame which holds the King\u2019s portrait is part of the Danish Royal Property Trust<\/a>. It was originally made for Empress Am\u00e9lie of Brazil, sister of Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway, to hold a portrait of her husband, Emperor Pedro I.<\/p>\n

The frame passed from Am\u00e9lie to Josefina and then to Josefina\u2019s granddaughter, Queen Lovisa, who brought it to Denmark. It\u2019s since been worn by all Danish queens: Alexandrine, with a portrait of King Christian X; Ingrid, with a portrait of King Frederik IX, and Margrethe II, again with a portrait of King Frederik IX. When Queen Margrethe II abdicated in 2024, the frame passed to Queen Mary, and a new miniature portrait of King Frederik X was painted and placed in the frame.<\/p>\n

Both of the ladies were elegantly dressed for the banquet. Queen Mary wore a dark red evening gown with a draped cape detail, made by a favorite royal design house, Elie Saab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She accessorized with a tiara that she purchased for her own collection more than a decade ago. The jewel, an Edwardian-era tiara that can also be worn as a necklace<\/a>, is set with diamonds, rubies, and spinels. She acquired the jewel in an auction at Bruun Rasmussen in the spring of 2012.<\/p>\n

The tiara was offered with a coordinating pair of earrings, but later Mary had a pair of larger new earrings made that match the design elements of the tiara. She wore the newer earrings with the tiara for the banquet in Vilnius.<\/p>\n

Mary finished the look with a ring on her right hand, which appears to be set with a large dark red gemstone, perhaps a ruby or a spinel.<\/p>\n

The state visit concluded on Thursday with a return reception hosted by the Danish royals at the National Library of Lithuania. During the reception, the royal and presidential couples jointly inaugurated an exhibition celebrating on the friendship between Denmark and Lithuania.<\/p>\n

For the reception, Queen Mary wore a white trouser suit with a blush pink blouse. She accessorized with a new pair of modern earrings featuring pink morganite drops.<\/p>\n

The earrings come from the Danish jewelry designer Julie Sandlau. They\u2019re part of the brand\u2019s Lumi collection, and they feature diamonds and morganites set in recycled 18-karat gold.
