\u201cI sent a letter last week to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to warn her about what is coming to New York City because we\u2019ve seen it around the country,\u201d Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, said.<\/p>\n

It comes after a video emerged several weeks ago showing a woman being shoved to the ground by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and continued efforts by the Trump administration to increase deportations

The Department of Homeland Security initially suspended the agent with ICE but later reinstated him. Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman said the ICE agents acted illegally<\/p>\n
Goldman is among local elected officials who are asking the NYPD to arrest or even charge federal agents who they say are detaining people illegally amid increased immigration enforcement by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cA couple weeks ago, a woman named Monica came to my office,\u201d Goldman said. \u201cFled to my office across the street with her two young children after she was assaulted by an ICE officer in this building.\u201d<\/p>\n
The encounter between that woman and a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was captured in a now-viral video. It shows the woman being shoved to the ground at 26 Federal Plaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe hit the back of her head,\u201d Goldman said. \u201cShe had a huge bump on her head, [so] she had to go to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a recent letter, Goldman asks Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to arrest and even charge federal agents who break New York\u2019s laws.<\/p>\n
The letter read, in part, \u201cI write to request that the New York City Police Department (NYPD or Department) be prepared to strictly enforce state and local laws in order to hold federal agents accountable for any unlawful actions they engage in, including potentially through arrest and prosecution for felony violations.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mom is a Latina from Peru,\u201d Assemblymember Tony Simone said. \u201cShe cries to me at night because she\u2019s afraid now to go shopping because of the color of her skin. She\u2019s much browner than me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Goldman and other officials said Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Tisch have a duty to protect individuals from such actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat if the mayor said to the police department, let\u2019s go try to enforce the laws of this city,\u201d Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said.<\/p>\n
City Comptroller Brad Lander was detained by ICE several months ago as he was attempting to escort someone out of immigration court.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe NYPD should protect New Yorkers and not allow them to be kidnapped by masked individuals who give no indication of who they are and who present no warrants, especially when they are lawful permanent U.S. residents or lawful citizens,\u201d Lander said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear whether there\u2019s any precedent for a local law enforcement agency policing federal agents.<\/p>\n
NY1 asked Goldman if the NYPD has the authority to do so.
