NEW YORK \u2013\u2013 Thousands of dogs are taking part in the 2026 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which began Saturday with an agility competition and runs through Tuesday evening when the Best in Show is selected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole world is here,\u201d said Karri Meyers, while prepping her English toy spaniel nicknamed \u201cBam Bam\u201d for the competition. \u201cThere\u2019s people from Thailand, there\u2019s people from Spain, from all over the world and all over the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
A longtime figure skating coach from Spring Lake, New Jersey, Meyers said her dog, whose full name is Barri Please Klear the Ice Favorite Dog, is himself originally from Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tom Clement from Liberty Hill, Texas, was showing Ringo, a Biewer terrier, on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really like coming here,\u201d Clement said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like our vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Andrew Giangreco from Acushnet, Massachusetts, brought Buca, a cane corso, to the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been enjoying the city, walking around, sniffing all of the things we can, eating some food and meeting people along the way,\u201d\u00a0 Giangreco said, adding that Buca\u2019s New York snack of choice was pizza crust.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As part of the competition, dogs compete against others of the same breed. Those rounds are followed by finals for each of the seven categories \u2014 hound, toy, nonsporting, herding, sporting, working and terrier \u2014 and winners of each face off to be crowned the Best in Show.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Several attendees said the festivities also offered the chance to enjoy New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Debbie Cowperthwait from south Jersey traveled with her French bulldog, Auggie, to the show, which is marking its 150th year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She said she and her pup have been enjoying the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking at lights at night in the buildings, it\u2019s just an amazing site to see if you\u2019ve never been to the city,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Among attendees were Pam and Tom Joyce from Washington, North Carolina, who brought their 3-year-old dalmatian, Spencer Jo.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a lot of fun,\u201d Pam Joyce said Monday. \u201cSpencer Jo is enjoying the city streets. She\u2019s been enjoying walking around and seeing her gray city chickens, which are pigeons.\u201d<\/p>\n
