Parts of the western U.S. are seeing some of the first significant snows of the season this week. Between 1 and 3 feet of snow is expected in the higher peaks of the Sierra Nevada region, while a foot of snow could pile up in the Cascades of Washington.<\/p>\n

With these early signs of winter in the West, it seems like a good time to ask one of the country\u2019s largest private weather forecasting companies what they think this winter will look like in the Northeast.<\/p>\n

AccuWeather\u2019s winter forecast for the Northeast<\/p>\n
Long-range winter forecasting isn\u2019t for the faint of heart. It requires wrestling with the complexity and chaos of our atmosphere and its inherent unpredictability when looking forward for an extended period. Those challenges don\u2019t keep the State College, Pennsylvania-based\u00a0AccuWeather<\/a> from sticking its neck out. They have been forecasting the country\u2019s weather for more than six decades.<\/p>\n AccuWeather\u2019s Lead Long-Range Expert, Paul Pastelok, has many things to consider in his winter crystal ball before coming up with a seasonal forecast. The factors that influence his forecast include water temperature anomalies in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as across the waters of the Gulf. Teleconnections describe distant climate relationships, patterns in one part of the world that influence weather far across the globe. We have already discussed how an expansive warm blob<\/a> of water, stretching from near Japan to the west coast of the U.S, and measuring nearly as big as our country, could help tip the scales in favor of a harsh winter for the East.<\/p>\n AccuWeather\u2019s forecast of snowfall departure for this winter.<\/p>\n AccuWeather<\/p>\n Pastelok and his forecast team at AccuWeather have taken all these things and more into account in their forecast for the winter of 2025-2026.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The bottom line for this winter\u2019s snowfall forecast in the Northeast is below-average snowfall for the coast and near-normal snowfall further inland.<\/p>\n AccuWeather\u2019s winter snowfall forecast for some selected cities.<\/p>\n AccuWeather<\/p>\n \u201cNear average snow, perhaps below average near the coast,\u201d is what Pastelok says he expects for New York.<\/p>\n \u201cNovember and December temperature above average, just occasional cold shots, but not persistent,\u201d he said when reached via email. \u201cJanuary can feature more ice, some snow, some rain. \u00a0February can be colder and probably more snow.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Live New York flood tracker: See river levels, storm alerts, radar<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
