{"id":123436,"date":"2026-02-05T02:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T02:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/123436\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T02:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T02:19:07","slug":"opera-singer-returns-home-for-harlem-renaissance-recital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/123436\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera singer returns home for Harlem Renaissance recital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lyrical poems and lively jazz music of the Harlem Renaissance have always been a source of comfort for Taylor Burgess.<\/p>\n<p>For the soprano singer from Wading River, the era is a reminder of how powerful art can be during difficult times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of parallels&#8221; to the present day, Burgess said.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0relatable. It&#8217;s really just shaped a lot of who I am as a person and as an artist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Burgess, a graduate of Riverhead High School, recently wrapped up a run <a class=\"nd-link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metopera.org\/about\/who-we-are\/chorus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in the chorus<\/a> for the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s production of &#8220;<a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metopera.org\/discover\/synopses\/porgy-and-bess\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Porgy and Bess<\/a>.&#8221; Before flying back to Amsterdam, where she lives full time, she\u2019s returning to her hometown to perform Sunday in a\u00a0Harlem Renaissance tribute at the Jamesport Meeting House.<\/p>\n<p>Her vision to bring classical music, opera and jazz to new audiences aligns with an effort by the Jamesport Meeting House to infuse the nearly 300-year-old space with modern programming.<\/p>\n<p>The Black History Month program is inspired by Black poets and composers and titled \u201cWinter Moon,\u201d <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/150975\/winter-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named for the Langston Hughes\u00a0poem<\/a>. Burgess&#8217; recital includes Hughes\u2019 poems set to music by <a class=\"nd-link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/entertainment\/books\/ricky-ian-gordon-seeing-through-o5grjy8t\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">composer<\/a> Ricky Ian Gordon, an Oceanside native\u00a0The performance\u00a0will feature\u00a0other works including\u00a0poetry by\u00a0James Weldon Johnson and music by <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/n83127097\/h-t-burleigh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry T. Burleigh<\/a> and Duke Ellington. She will be accompanied by pianist Eunha So.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely going to be a mix of worlds,\u201d Burgess said. \u201cSometimes we think of winter as cold and lonely and dark, but there\u2019s this warmth that this poem brings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burgess, 29, got a bachelor\u2019s degree in jazz from Purchase College and in 2023, completed her master\u2019s at the Dutch National Opera Academy, becoming its first Black graduate.<\/p>\n<p>She debuted at the Met during a 2024 revival of Terence Blanchard\u2019s \u201cFire Shut Up In My Bones.\u201d\u00a0It\u00a0was the first time the storied opera house had put on a performance from a Black composer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really didn\u2019t hit me until I finished the show,\u201d Burgess said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much history attached to it. You hear people singing in the hallways and it sounds like the gates of heaven have just busted open. I was so shocked by all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s for everyone&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1731, the meeting house is the East End&#8217;s oldest public building. It is\u00a0run by a nonprofit that hosts\u00a0<a class=\"nd-link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/towns\/jamesport-meeting-house-preservation-qexaku0v\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vibrant community programming, ranging<\/a>\u00a0from civic meetings to Shakespeare, funk bands and opera.<\/p>\n<p>Offering a mix of genres at affordable prices is a central part of the nonprofit&#8217;s mission, said Jeff Greenberger, of Cutchogue, who sits on the board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s thrilling for us to be able to offer an increasing variety of programs for the public,&#8221; he said in an interview. &#8220;We don\u2019t have a full dance card, but every year there\u2019s a little bit more that we put on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Performing a homecoming show has become a tradition for Burgess, who also visited her alma mater in Riverhead to lead a master class for music students last week.<\/p>\n<p>Dena Tishim, the high\u00a0school\u2019s assistant principal and former chorus teacher, proudly watched as the alum\u00a0fielded questions about everything from breathing techniques to life abroad and the realities of an opera career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe certainly had something, and it\u2019s been amazing to watch it bloom,\u201d Tishim said in an interview. It\u2019s important to expose students to the art of\u00a0opera, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLive music is always different than listening to music on the radio,&#8221; Tishim said.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s important to experience a variety so we can learn to be educated musical consumers, able to sit and listen to multiple different things, experience it and decide for yourself what you think of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burgess hopes to inspire young students at her upcoming recital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means opening doors that maybe didn\u2019t even exist in the past &#8230; and continuing to make room for those that also want to experience this lifestyle and practice this art, because it\u2019s so beautiful,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bringing the Harlem Renaissance to Jamesport<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Burgess, an opera singer and Riverhead High School grad, will perform a Harlem Renaissance tribute at the Jamesport Meeting House on Feb. 8 at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Jamesport Meeting House dates to 1731. A nonprofit formed in 2008 to save the landmark from commercial development.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and students.
