NEW YORK \u2013\u00a0Amid a\u00a0winter\u00a0of relentless Arctic conditions<\/a>, the most\u00a0powerful polar punch of the season\u00a0is expected this week across the\u00a0Northeast, with dangerous\u00a0wind chill temperatures\u00a0approaching 25 degrees below zero in some places.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Powerful winds of the northwest will usher in air associated with the\u00a0polar vortex\u00a0to the densely populated metro areas of\u00a0Boston,\u00a0New York\u00a0and\u00a0Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

National Weather Service (NWS) offices are keeping a close eye on the weather setup and could issue Extreme Cold Warnings \u2014 rarely seen in the Northeast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Frostbite<\/a> can set in on open skin within just a few minutes and prolonged exposure to these temperatures could be life-threatening<\/a>, according to the NWS.<\/p>\n

A cold front will move across\u00a0New England, the Northeast and reach the Interstate 95 corridor by Saturday morning, accompanied by wind gusts up to 30 mph.<\/p>\n

The front comes on the heels of a fast-moving\u00a0clipper\u00a0system that will bring a dusting of snow<\/a> and could create\u00a0brief periods of whiteout driving conditions for the region on Friday.<\/p>\n

The closer the clipper<\/a> stays to the coast as it exits, the stronger the winds behind them will be, as cold air rushes in to fill that vacuum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The freeze<\/a> will intensify into Sunday morning as wind chills could easily plummet into the negative teens for millions in Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.<\/p>\n

It will be even colder across parts of the interior, including\u00a0New York\u2019s Capital region.\u00a0Albany\u00a0could see wind chills lower than minus 23 degrees.<\/p>\n

From arctic blast to bone-chilling temperatures<\/a> \u2014 or even meat-locker cold, meteorologists and residents across the Northeast are running out of adjectives to describe winter\u2019s death-grip over the region this season.<\/p>\n

Fortunately,\u00a0a measure of relief is finally on the way later this month due to a major change in the weather pattern.<\/p>\n
