With another weekend of bone-chilling temperatures hitting New York City, family and friends are invited to join Figure Skating in Harlem<\/a>\u2018s annual winter skating party. The afternoon fun will include performances and a chance for attendees to skate alongside the stars of the Emmy Award-nominated Disney+ \u201cHarlem Ice\u201d series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All proceeds support the nonprofit organization\u2019s academic and skating programs helping girls of color (ages 6\u201318) soar in education and life. Founded by Sharon Cohen<\/a>, the program has served nearly 2,500 girls and young women within Harlem and the\u00a0surrounding communities.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the holiday, which falls on Feb. 17<\/a> this year, The Met is getting a jump on the celebration with its comprehensive collection of Asian art \u2014 containing more than 35,000 objects representing Asia\u2019s many civilizations \u2014 serving as a backdrop.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s festivities include a lion and dragon dance performance by the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute<\/a>, a drum dance from New York Korean Performing Arts Center, and a traditional dance from the Vietnam Heritage Center.<\/p>\n

The Columbia Wushu Martial Arts team, The AAPI Jazz Collective<\/a> led by Peter Lin, Sesame Street Muppeteers<\/a> and storytime reading with \u201cTomorrow is New Year\u2019s Day\u201d author Aram Kim<\/a> are also highlights of the day. The museum\u2019s crown jewel Temple of Dendur<\/a> will serve as a community hub shining a spotlight on AAPI<\/a> organizations around New York City showcasing art, events, and resources.<\/p>\n

Executive director Cara Hagan<\/a> has built upon the prolific legacy of the festival\u2019s late founder, Susan Braun, with a robust line-up of 33 films from 12 countries selected from nearly 250 submissions.<\/p>\n

A special 75th anniversary presentation of Vincente Minnelli\u2019s classic \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d<\/a> is a highlight this year, alongside Tobin Del Cuore\u2019<\/a>s Lim\u00f3n Dance Company<\/a>-focused \u201cThrough Memory,\u201d Jennifer Lin\u2019s \u201cAbout Face: Disrupting Ballet\u201d<\/a> and the New York premiere of Tara Knight & Rebecca Salzer\u2019s short \u201cthe desire of a body toward the center of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first-time ever, six-time Grammy-winning<\/a> Latin Jazz virtuoso Arturo O\u2019Farrill<\/a> and his Afro-Latin Octet will share the stage with George Gee Swing Orchestra<\/a> for the venue\u2019s \u201cGlobal Mashup\u201d series. Arrangements from \u201cThe Buena Vista Social Club Songbook<\/a>\u201d will be included throughout the evening, featuring expansive sets from both ensembles.<\/p>\n

A dance lesson for the audience led by Latin dance pro Vanda Polakova<\/a> will kick off the festivities.<\/p>\n

New York-born artist, author and luxury ready-to-wear fashion designer Clarence Ruth<\/a> is the curator behind this first-of-its-kind exhibition transforming original Carrom game boards<\/a> into contemporary works of art.<\/p>\n

Artists Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cruz, Bustart, Jeremy Yuto Nakamura<\/a>, Clarence Heyward, Dynasty Ogun, Soull Ogun, Sebastian Piras<\/a>, James Rubio, James Reyes, Luke Ivy Price, Sasha Bhasin, Cornelius Tulloch<\/a> brought their artistic reinterpretations to the popular South Asian tabletop, strike-and-pocket game.<\/p>\n

Ruth\u2019s \u201cOreo\u201d is said to be \u201ca visual representation of how people wear masks everyday to show what others want to see\u201d and invoke the silhouettes of Mickey Mouse and Goofy.<\/p>\n
