(NEW YORK, NY, 2\/5\/26) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a chapter of the nation\u2019s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization,\u00a0today welcomed\u00a0the arrest of a Staten Island woman accused of carrying out a series of violent, anti-Muslim hate crime attacks<\/a> in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, including the assault of a 12-year-old Muslim girl.\u00a0<\/p>\n

CAIR-NY said the alleged attacks \u201care part of a broader and alarming rise in anti-Muslim hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the NYPD,\u00a034-year-old\u00a0Megan Horne allegedly attacked three Muslims on January 30, targeting victims while making anti-Muslim remarks. The incidents included pushing and kicking a woman\u00a0walking down the\u00a0street\u00a0with her child, assaulting another woman\u00a0attempting\u00a0to board a bus, and punching a\u00a0minor\u00a0outside a school.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All three victims were wearing a hijab, an Islamic headscarf.\u00a0Authorities have charged the suspect with multiple offenses, including assault and aggravated harassment as hate crimes, as well as acting in a manner injurious to a child.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement,\u00a0CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq., said: \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we welcome\u00a0the arrest of the suspect\u00a0as\u00a0an important step\u00a0toward\u00a0accountability,\u00a0these disturbing attacks are part of a broader and alarming rise in anti-Muslim hate that is leaving our communities fearful and vulnerable. A child being targeted makes this violence especially egregious and underscores the urgent need for stronger protections against bias-motivated crimes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cWe encourage anyone who experiences or\u00a0witnesses\u00a0a bias-motivated incident to report it to law enforcement and civil rights organizations. We commend law enforcement authorities for taking these incidents seriously and stands in solidarity with the victims and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n
