STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 As of Thursday morning, the New York City Department of Sanitation has issued 2,738 summonses for the failure to clear snow and ice since Winter Storm Fern<\/a>, according to a department spokesperson.<\/p>\n

Of those 2,738 summonses, 299 were issued on Staten Island.<\/p>\n

These summonses represent a relatively small portion of the total number of summonses issued by the department this snow season. According to the spokesperson, since Dec. 14, 2025, 16,649 summonses were issued citywide. Only 1,447 of those have been issued on Staten Island.<\/p>\n

The snow blanket that coated the city after Winter Storm Fern continues to plague residents. While Sanitation workers continue to carry out their duties<\/a> to remove snow wherever they can, individual residents also have a role to play in the wake of a snowstorm.<\/p>\n

During a snow event, property owners have a responsibility to clear a path on the sidewalk at least four feet wide to allow passersby to safely make their way through, the spokesperson explained. In addition to sidewalks, snow and ice must be cleared from around fire hydrants, sidewalk curb cuts, ramps and bus stops.<\/p>\n

Should residents fail to meet these responsibilities, they could get hit with monetary fines.<\/p>\n

A resident who fails to shovel their sidewalk can expect a $100 fine for their first offense in a 12-month period, a $150 fine for the second and a $250 fine for the third.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the spokesperson emphasized that it is illegal to shovel snow into the street as it is both dangerous and impedes snow-clearing operations.<\/p>\n
