{"id":124602,"date":"2026-02-06T01:05:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T01:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/124602\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T01:05:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T01:05:07","slug":"historic-railroad-powerhouse-is-at-risk-of-collapse-leading-to-road-closure-in-this-n-j-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/124602\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic railroad powerhouse is at risk of collapse, leading to road closure in this N.J. city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SP66QDJAFZBA5CIMX57Y4KM5TU\">A road closure is in effect in Jersey City on Thursday night as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/hudson\/2025\/01\/powerhouse-promise-unleash-potential-of-jersey-city-cultural-heritage-site-legends-landmarks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/hudson\/2025\/01\/powerhouse-promise-unleash-potential-of-jersey-city-cultural-heritage-site-legends-landmarks.html\">Hudson &amp; Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse<\/a> building has sustained structural cracks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARP34Q2ZKJC75HFLGWAIR5EF2A\">The visible cracks in the tower are believed to have been caused by vibrations from nearby commuter rail lines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerseycitynj.gov\/cityhall\/MayorSolomon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.jerseycitynj.gov\/cityhall\/MayorSolomon\">Jersey City Mayor James Solomon\u2019s office<\/a> said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XKJCZXLSZJGRLPPCQUNGHXSPDU\">A contractor has installed vertical stabilization straps along the exterior of the building to secure the structure. However, some of the straps have started to loosen, creating potentially unsafe conditions, officials said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7Q33AYRLBFC6TNQ33DPETMVN7Y\">Cold temperatures and strong winds make these conditions even more unsafe, the mayor\u2019s office said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EKRKHGLMQFAWNLGBDO3BETSPL4\">Greene Street has been shut down near the intersection of Bay Street and the area has been designated as a potential collapse zone. Southbound traffic on Greene Street is being rerouted onto Bay Street. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6Z7X6SVM6RDJDCEQWOM3NJU2OA\">The closure will remain in effect until the building is fully secured. The Office of Emergency Management was on the scene on Thursday conducting an aerial drone assessment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HKWA4OKIP5CETHITILR32DJWIU\">The Powerhouse, built between 1906 and 1908, was designed to provide electricity to trains, tunnels and stations on both sides of the Hudson River.
