NEW YORK, NY\u2014 Authorities expanded their search for Nancy Guthrie, the mother of \u201cToday\u201d show host Savannah Guthrie, as the investigation entered its fifth day and officials continued to probe what they believe may have been an abduction.<\/p>\n
Guthrie, who has said she lives in Brooklyn Heights, has shared repeated public appeals for her mother\u2019s return.<\/p>\n
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night at her home in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department. Her family reported her missing Sunday after she failed to attend church, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators believe Guthrie was taken from her home while asleep. No suspect or person of interest has been identified, and authorities do not know whether she was targeted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t know where she is, and we don\u2019t know why this happened,\u201d Nanos said a news conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s department scheduled a new briefing on the case for 1 p.m. ET on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Guthrie\u2019s children released a video message Wednesday pleading for her safe return.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone is looking for you, Mommy, everywhere,\u201d Savannah Guthrie said in the video. \u201cWe will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Authorities said Guthrie has limited mobility and relies on medication that could be fatal if not taken within 24 hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is 84 years old, her health, her heart is fragile,\u201d Savannah Guthrie said. \u201cShe lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n
The FBI has joined the investigation and is sending additional agents and specialists to assist local authorities, according to sources familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n
Investigators are also reviewing possible ransom letters sent to media outlets. The Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department said it is working to determine whether the letters are legitimate. <\/p>\n
An ABC Tucson affiliate reported<\/a> receiving one of the letters and turning it over to law enforcement. CBS affiliate KOLD News<\/a> also confirmed receiving similar communications.<\/p>\n Addressing reports of ransom notes, Savannah Guthrie said the family is prepared to engage, but urged caution.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a family, we are doing everything that we can,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her.
