STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Staten Island residents should prepare for potentially life-threatening cold this weekend as the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning starting Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, with wind chills expected to plunge to -15 to -20 degrees.<\/p>\n
The arctic front will arrive in Staten Island Saturday morning, bringing rapidly falling temperatures throughout the day. According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is also in effect from 9 a.m. Saturday until midnight, with sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph and gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph expected across the borough.<\/p>\n
Snow is forecast to develop Friday night into early Saturday, though accumulations will be light with only a half inch to two inches expected. The combination of snow, extreme cold, and powerful winds will create dangerous outdoor conditions. <\/p>\n
The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes in these conditions, and residents should limit time outdoors and dress in layers.<\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s high temperature will struggle to reach the teens before plummeting overnight. The extreme cold will continue into Sunday morning before conditions begin to moderate slightly, though temperatures will remain well below freezing.<\/p>\n
The bitter cold will gradually ease by Monday, with a warming trend expected through midweek. By Thursday, temperatures should reach the mid to upper 30s, which is still slightly below the seasonal normal of around 40 degrees.<\/p>\n
