Accused healthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione<\/a>\u00a0railed about \u201cdouble jeopardy\u201d in a courtroom outburst Friday after a judge set a June 8 trial date in his headline-grabbing case.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old Ivy League grad was left fuming after Manhattan state Judge Gregory Carro set the early trial date \u2014 leapfrogging a\u00a0separate October trial date\u00a0<\/a>set\u00a0by a federal judge\u00a0in the Southern District of New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the same trial twice. One plus one equals two. This is double jeopardy by any common sense\u00a0definition!\u201d\u00a0Mangione shouted<\/a>\u00a0toward reporters as court officers led him from the room.<\/p>\n

Mangione\u2019s lawyer,\u00a0Karen Friedman Agnifilo,\u00a0also\u00a0claimed in court that they wouldn\u2019t be ready for trial in June, prompting a scathing reply from the judge.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe ready,\u201d Carro seethed from the bench.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s drama was the latest chapter in a struggle between federal and state prosecutors over who would bring the Maryland native to trial on charges of killing\u00a0UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson<\/a>\u00a0on a Midtown sidewalk in cold blood in December 2024.<\/p>\n

Mangione\u00a0was charged with the murder in state\u00a0court first,<\/a>\u00a0but the feds swooped in days later with their own case\u00a0\u2014 which sources told The Post was\u00a0spurred by\u00a0health insurance industry leaders\u00a0<\/a>pressuring the Justice Department to make an example out of him.<\/p>\n

Judge Margaret Garnett has set an October 12 trial date in the federal case, which now sets up the possibility of the accused assassin facing back-to-back trials for the same killing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour honor, Mr. Mangione is being put in an untenable position,\u201d Agnifilo told the court Friday. \u201cThis is a tug of war between two prosecution offices.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s utterly unfair that they are trying to get two bites of the apple,\u201d the attorney added.<\/p>\n

Mangione\u2019s lawyers have pushed for the federal trial to go first, which would effectively bar the state trial from happening afterward because of the Empire State\u2019s double jeopardy protections.<\/p>\n

If the state trial happens first, the federal trial could still follow, though Mangione\u2019s lawyers will likely renew their double jeopardy arguments in federal court.<\/p>\n

Thompson\u2019s relatives have asked that the accused killer go on trial in state court first, Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann said in court Friday.<\/p>\n

Manhattan federal prosecutors claimed in late 2024, in the waning days of the Biden administration, that they had agreed to go to trial after the state case. But Judge Carro noted Friday that \u201cit\u00a0appears the federal government has reneged on its agreement to let the state, which has done most of the work in this case, go first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty<\/a>, is due back in state court in May for a ruling on whether the Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office can use the evidence Altoona, Pa. cops found in his backpack, including the alleged murder weapon, at his trial.<\/p>\n

Mangione also wrote in his notebook about executing Thompson in a targeted attack meant to bring light on what the accused killer called a \u201cparasitic\u201d insurance industry, prosecutors say.<\/p>\n
