NEW YORK (PIX111) \u2013 New York City and the surrounding areas are prepping for cold temperatures and possibly a couple of inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starting Friday evening and continuing into Saturday, the city is preparing for one to two inches of snow, according to the New York City Department of Sanitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cDangerous cold temperatures\u201d and strong winds are expected over the weekend. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 50 mph, and the wind chills will be as low as -25 degrees, according to the NWS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How the city is preparing<\/p>\n

Warming centers are expected to be open throughout the five boroughs. To find a warming center near you, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers can also call 311 to find a warming center.<\/p>\n

DSNY has issued a Winter Operations Advisory and will be ready to plow streets, if necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 700 salt spreaders and specialized bike lane spreaders are filled and ready to go at the first sign of precipitation,\u201d a post on the DSNY website<\/a> read.\u00a0 \u201cDSNY will monitor and plan salting from its GPS room, featuring the new Bladerunner 2.0 tracking operation. Be assured: collection IS ongoing, and New Yorkers should follow their normal schedule, even if material is collected at a different time of day than they are used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York City Office of Emergency Management has issued an Extreme Cold Warning that runs from Saturday at 10 a.m. to Sunday at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
