Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood alongside emergency officials at a weather briefing in the NYC Office of Emergency Management Friday to discuss the extra effort the city is providing ahead of this weekend’s bitter cold temperatures.<\/p>\n
Seventeen people died during New York City\u2019s last winter storm, which was nearly two weeks ago. The mayor says hypothermia played a role in 13 of those deaths.<\/p>\n
The city is now ramping up its outreach to prevent that from happening again.<\/p>\n
This includes enlisting school nurses as part of its outreach teams, mobilizing crisis management, and a new pilot program where formally homeless individuals will join teams to get people off the street and inside.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s also 65 new hotels open for individuals reluctant to accept congregate settings. This weekend, the city is also operating 62 warming centers and vehicles, reopening ten public schools as warming centers and adding new CUNY warming centers. <\/p>\n
