{"id":126100,"date":"2026-02-07T10:47:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T10:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126100\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T10:47:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T10:47:13","slug":"staten-island-historian-recalls-the-opening-of-the-verrazzano-and-the-chaos-that-followed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126100\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island historian recalls the opening of the Verrazzano, and the \u2018chaos\u2019 that followed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C2RMBO4HMJHORBMH7NQ4BV6ZNU\">While the saying you can\u2019t stop progress may be true, you do have to plan for it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NXMAAED2GBEDLMLHP42CGZLFDA\">And when one doesn\u2019t look ahead when planning a major project, such as building a colossal bridge that would finally connect Staten Island and Brooklyn, well, a bit of chaos has to be expected. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BR6V42PKW5BSXBCFKVSONVRSYU\">That\u2019s the idea behind long-time resident Patricia M. Salmon\u2019s latest book, \u201cStaten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: Chaos Comes to a Community&#8221; (The History Press). The book, which was released on Jan. 21, highlights the host of issues that arose when the bridge opened on Nov. 21, 1964 and in the years that followed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XOLODPKM5VDLXJU7XNRO66MBEY\">Salmon remembers all too well how Merrill Avenue, the block she grew up on in Bulls Head, transformed after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was built. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"salmon\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AJHXPOCX35CTHBCER53Q4QXSFQ.jpeg\"  \/> Pat Salmon (Photo \/ Claire Keag)Third-Party-Submitted<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VDNE2GM3GBDD7KASNHUIDVWSNI\"> \u201cWe went from being in the sticks to being in modern suburbia in a very short period of time,\u201d said Salmon, who moved with her family at the age of 2 to Staten Island. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"salmon\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/TGKOSQ7FZZHKNOOGELOTT474QE.jpg\"  \/>The late Frank Salmon with his sister, patricia Salmon, during construction of the bridge in 1963. Salmon recalled how Merrill Avenue was a dirt road when it reached South Avenue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UBV5TIB2RJBDDHWBFWRIRMELY4\"> A few short years later, that landscape completely changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RNHU3H5ZZZFW5ICBTTKHCHADY4\"> \u201cI remember lumber trucks and cement mixers going up and down the streets because they were building colonies,\u201d said the longtime historian. \u201cIt was a free-for-all. Staten Island AdvanceStaten Island Advance<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KBJWD5GV3JERPIGDUQDP4HQ6DA\">The population surge led to a rise in traffic, along with overcrowded schools and other issues that went hand in hand with the fast-paced development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"65CEEKVMWZFSJAZ52WQRF5CLDU\">\u201cThere was no sewer system for the most part,\u201d Salmon said, adding that they (builders) were putting septic tanks in and there simply wasn\u2019t enough room for all of the septic tanks needed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZCGIVPC2FVGX3ARU5BIACTLDMY\">While the bridge may have put a strain on Staten Island infrastructure, it helped to advance the borough\u2019s grassroots movement, as residents stepped up to protect its open spaces. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"salmon\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/CVZ4RXDQQ5F2BC6HCU7N7HZ7LY.jpeg\"  \/>Pat&#8217;s brother, James P. They were very vocal about what was wrong and what needed to be done,\u201d said Salmon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VJXEAOTAFRESNDZRVF77QIOASY\">Groups like the Staten Island Greenbelt Natural Areas League (S.I.G.N.A.L.) formed to block the expressway from cutting through the Greenbelt. The momentum continued and more groups continued to preserve open spaces, including the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/from-opposition-to-collaboration-staten-islands-protectors-of-pine-oak-woods-turns-50.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">who incorporated in 1975 to pursue Environmental Bond Act funds and establish state parks<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DTTQ2VG6GFFEHJAFBQO55BLAZE\">The hard work of these groups, Salmon noted, are the \u201csuccess stories\u201d of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MTCHPNJYQBACJFJFAIZJNPTVRQ\">\u201cThey preserved so much land and now there\u2019s acres and acres of land where people can go and they can do everything from bird watching to bicycling to nature study.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"salmon\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/33PRXAHFJZHEJFTBQ5P54QKX54.jpg\"  \/>Pat Salmon a the 19th annual Columcille Cultural Center&#8217;s Staten Ireland Irish Festival at Mount Loretto, Saturday, June 10, 2017. That journey began, she recalls, as a young girl exploring the Port Richmond Library, where she found Staten Island and Its People: A History by Charles W. Leng and William T. Davis. She was thrilled to come across historical information about the Merrell family whom her block, Merrill Avenue (though spelled slightly different), was named after. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MB6S2U37IVHEZD6VDHCSLVCDXA\">\u201cThe Merrell Family came from England in the 1700s,\u201d she said.\u201dTheir property extended from Richmond Avenue to the Arthur Kill River.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M3N33JOXONEGDN6LKB2BAHAQ6U\">Her love of history and interest in the outdoors led her to become a professional naturalist at the age of 25. She worked at Clay Pit Pond Park Reserve from 1985 to 1993. While at Clay Pit, she got involved in writing about the park and its history, as well as interviewing those who were knowledgeable about the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"573WH2MCZVD3PL354H547W2MU4\">\u201cWorking there really fueled my love of history. It\u2019s a very historical area. All of Staten Island is very historical\u2013from one end to another,\u201d Salmon said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OZS4WOORFJD2ZHP6VAYLXPQ5NA\">History isn\u2019t Salmon\u2019s only love: \u201cI\u2019m Irish. Some of the men were related but all became a family due to the dangerous job they performed daily. She also relates stories of families like her own who came to see the construction of the bridge, usually with a camera in hand to take pictures at sites like Fort Wadsworth or Von Briesen Park. (Triborough Bridge\/Tunnel Authority photo)Triborough Bridge\/Tunnel<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6ZMQECHJ7ZHBHLJUEUXASFWSVE\">Salmon\u2019s love of sharing these stories from the past led her to study communications with a minor in history, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Staten Island (CSI) and a Master of Science degree in Liberal Studies, with an emphasis on history, also from CSI. There\u2019s so much history and there\u2019s so much to absorb,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NJNMEKPZ2RHEBIR7E3SOQOVAHY\">Salmon, who is still a guest lecturer at CSI, Wagner College and at a host of other organizations and cultural institutions, is always pleased to see others take an interest in learning about their community through her books or other resources. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O5DRHKHSMBC2FFTHKQNHKRFMQ4\">\u201cWhen people know what\u2019s happening around them they are much more interested in preservation of their neighborhoods,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gives them pride\u2026and it draws people closer to their community and close to their neighbors.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QZMIUB3KDNGUVN3PRWLKIA67HU\">Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: Chaos Comes to a Community can be purchased online through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadiapublishing.com\/products\/staten-island-and-the-verrazzano-narrows-bridge-9781467170321\/?queryID=c38238660f5c4c14f31da090883d9a95&amp;objectID=9781467170321&amp;insightsIndex=arcadia-publishing_products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arcadia Publishing<\/a> website.
