{"id":126163,"date":"2026-02-07T13:19:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T13:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126163\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T13:19:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T13:19:45","slug":"staten-island-cyo-cheerleading-with-a-veteran-heavy-roster-olqp-looks-to-make-noise-with-new-game-day-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126163\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island CYO Cheerleading: With a veteran-heavy roster, OLQP looks to make noise with new Game-Day team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ITFH4ZUQ5NFDBFXFDTBEPZ2QAI\">(Editor\u2019s note: This is the fourth article in a series of CYO Varsity division cheer stories SILive.com will focus on leading up the Island championships in March.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EHQPRRST3REKRF4EKFOLK4OJ3E\">When it comes to sports, it\u2019s fair to say coaches are supposed to push their athletes past their comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ASL35UOKKRHNRH722B5FLVA2ZU\">However, while that usually entails practicing new skills or putting more work into honing their craft, Our Lady Queen of Peace\u2019s varsity cheer program took it a step further with the inception of its Game-Day team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OIBGMVECVBFXDPTUXR2VEC6H5E\">\u201cWe always wanted to do it and did a lot of research on it, and we really wanted to push our girls beyond something they\u2019re comfortable with,\u201d said coach Courtney Gonnella. \u201cWe wanted to teach them that they\u2019re resilient, strong and capable of doing new things and pushing them beyond their limits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Q2HKZ7JEBJF5XJRTXEJNYW7HCA.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/OFORDXMRANB5JKHPX6R2OEXZE4.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>1\/70<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-gallery-caption\">OLQP looks to be bigger and better with inception of its Game-Day team<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4NAURWHYGNHXZG4BXG6BEIKJIM\">But, while OLQP\u2019s coaching staff was ready for the change, it didn\u2019t come without external support. Turning to current Ursuline School head coach John Braca, who previously coached on Staten Island, the team was able to find its footing in the division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MEISIN6YH5FJFAVVM2RCZIGN5E\">\u201cWhen the opportunity came we knew we were ready and just needed the help to create the routine, which is when we turned to John,\u201d added Melissa Harkins, with Molly Maloy rounding out the staff. \u201cHe\u2019s been doing it for a long now and has won championships, so we pulled in the best and asked him to help us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JXLRYLC5PJALDF6ZUVKB7TG6Q4\">\u201cWith him also having roots in Staten Island, it was nice to pull in someone that knew about Game-Day and what happens on Staten Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JCBFKYANUNDTXE5IAGC6R4SFMQ\">And now, with roughly a month and a half until its final competition, the Queens certainly feel they\u2019ve evolved enough to leave a mark in their first year.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLQP Varsity\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/POKNEPT5INDVJKKYRCSWBDEQ3A.jpg\"  \/>With a veteran-heavy roster, OLQP looks to challenge itself to become bigger and better with the inception of its Game-Day team. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K5U5WNFUXFBXJPXCNOV4QLLVEM\">\u201cThe girls have definitely gotten more comfortable &#8211; at first it was very awkward for them because they had to be \u2018silly\u2019 while energetic the whole time. That was difficult for them, but they\u2019ve learned from watching the high school teams compete at Nationals and getting a better picture of what they need to do,\u201d added Gonnella. \u201cOur parents are getting into it now too &#8211; asking for the words to the cheer and practicing it at home with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QAAVUYTV5JEZ3PCAMSR4UQT6KU\">\u201cThey\u2019ve really gone above and beyond this season, and it\u2019s bringing it all together because both the girls and the fans are ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VZG75ZHJW5BMJAGD3MXS3IHUYU\">Coming off of two tough losses in CYO competition last year, the coaching staff feels its now-veteran roster will bring the school back to winning it all come March.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLQP Varsity\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SH7IKNGS4ZFLHD6BMVEL4KTLGI.jpg\"  \/>With a veteran-heavy roster, OLQP looks to challenge itself to become bigger and better with the inception of its Game-Day team. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KU4IE3OQMZGXFHY6L7VOMBZ4BQ\">\u201cWe told them at the beginning of the season that, now being upperclassmen, we had to push them more. They really stepped into that role, especially our seventh-graders,\u201d said Harkens. \u201cThey\u2019re the reason we\u2019ll have success this year, as they keep pushing their skills and asking what they could do to make it better &#8211; [whether] it\u2019s spinning to one leg instead of two or removing a base in some stunts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IKMMKJC7NFBAFMPAGTXUZWFRL4\">Gonnella and Harkens also noted an increased focus on tumbling this season, with twelve girls involved in the section opposed to just three last year, along with putting in more advanced skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OJNAF4M5MJGPVK6KE6Y5M4R47I\">\u201cThey\u2019re trying to better their tumbling and jumps because they know those are areas we can\u2019t miss on, and while we used to take the loss on [the lack of tumbling] that\u2019s not the case anymore,\u201d added Harkens, highlighting Island All-Starz for their efforts in helping the squad. \u201cInversions were also a foreign language to them, so in the summer we worked with Moore\u2019s [cheer team] and had Hill girls come to our practice to get under it and show them what it should feel like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RCRZOQTFTNDH5E3IUADBCSANTU\">\u201cOne day it just clicked and they really amazed us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLQP Varsity\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/RUWXAQTU3BDXPJEG77RSO4KRMA.jpg\"  \/>With a veteran-heavy roster, OLQP looks to challenge itself to become bigger and better with the inception of its Game-Day team. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X3ODBWI765CY7CEYFZBQPMFYGI\">Now, in the final stretch of its season, the Queens are prioritizing cleanliness and maximizing the routine\u2019s impact as the main event approaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TTBM4TXCN5A3TKPOFHRALR5RLQ\">\u201cCheerleading is always about technique, execution and cleanliness &#8211; we actually taught them the word the other day, and put bubbles on the back of their competition bows to remind them of their goal,\u201d concluded Harkens. \u201cExecution will get them where they need to be, so we want them to do what they have to do, be clean and just be proud of themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLQP Varsity\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IJUUO4ZDABEH7GLUR6FXECBOLM.jpg\"  \/>With a veteran-heavy roster, OLQP looks to challenge itself to become bigger and better with the inception of its Game-Day team. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"36PJNNENUNFJFO3ZZWJRLOABAY\">CHEERLEADER\u2019S CORNER<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D457MTZW45GBRI353MGSQP5OUY\">The Staten Island Advance\/SILIVE.com, to highlight some of the young cheerleaders spending multiple days a week practicing and preparing for competition, spoke with seventh-graders Charlotte Tala-Tala (main base) and Grace Waters (side base) to get their thoughts on the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NA7WEJCPYNBUVJIEAOG3KTHRHQ\">What is your favorite routine to perform and why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"66AIMIDPIVBFZCKMUTHGI4ER4U\">CT: My favorite is traditional, because I personally love doing lots of stunts along with tumbling and jumping. I think, when the whole team does it, it\u2019s just so cool and fun to see when people just fly up in the air. It\u2019s just amazing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6UNM3F3YQFA5JCC4EWAIZSA6KA\">GW: My favorite routine is Game-Day because I love the crowd interaction and how everyone gets all hyped. It just gives me so much love inside my body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T7Y7TPHOBFE3FFPPYJI65GZO5U\">What\u2019s one goal you have for the season?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QSZJHNSIFNF65L6QCTRNTSU5B4\">CT: To hit all of our stunts &#8211; I want everyone to be happy for what they\u2019ve worked hard for all year long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KPORQFSUKBHARJSMAR7ZKGUPNE\">GW: To make traditions with my team &#8211; I want them to remember me and remember all I did for and with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IERV2DM5SBHK7HXKMNKMO6OCH4\">What\u2019s one pre-competition ritual you have?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EXAIDG5DHVFYDHTEUTWPVMFAVM\">CT &amp; GW: We do our handshake together and, before we go to the competition, we get Starbucks and it makes up all hyped up.
