{"id":126212,"date":"2026-02-07T14:43:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T14:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126212\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T14:43:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T14:43:12","slug":"family-of-ny-nun-up-for-sainthood-calls-on-pope-leo-for-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/126212\/","title":{"rendered":"Family of NY nun up for sainthood calls on Pope Leo for help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of Mother Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory, an Irish nun who founded the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, is praying <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/25\/world-news\/pope-leo-xiv-sounds-alarm-over-overly-affectionate-ai-chatbots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pope Leo XIV<\/a> will advance her decades-long quest for sainthood.<\/p>\n<p>Mother Angeline \u2014 who\u2019s credited with two purported miracles that healed sick children \u2014 died on Jan. 21, 1984, her 91st birthday.<\/p>\n<p>She founded the order in upstate Germantown in 1929 with a radical mission: creating home-like nursing facilities where the elderly, rich or poor, could live side by side with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>Mother Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory was a New York nun<br \/>who is currently up for sainthood in the Catholic church. Friends of Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa\/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, then-Pope Benedict XVI declared Mother Angeline had led a life of \u201cheroic virtue,\u201d considered a key stepping stone toward sainthood and giving her the title of \u201cVenerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now her case for canonization rests in Rome with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/03\/world-news\/pope-leo-goes-viral-after-hes-gifted-favorite-candy-on-earth-while-riding-popemobile\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago-born Pope Leo<\/a> XIV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would be more fitting than an American pope making her a saint?\u201d grandniece Katie McCrory told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had European ideals and everything, spoke French, very cultured, but her impact was in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Mario Esposito, the vice postulator for the Cause for the Beatification and Canonization of Mother Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory, agreed that the pope could turn the nun into a pet cause, given <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/24\/world-news\/pope-leo-xiv-very-disappointed-after-his-home-state-of-illinois-approves-assisted-suicide-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his recent focus on elder care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, being an American, he would be more sensitive to the issues in health care. Catholic health care in the United States is a very big thing. The Carmelite Sisters have been at the forefront of being against physician-assisted suicide,\u201d Esposito reasoned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are issues I\u2019m sure the pope cares about. Life has become under attack, especially the elderly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Mother Angeline is credited with two purported miracles that healed sick children. The Mother Angeline Society<\/p>\n<p>McCrory\u2019s next threshold on the way to sainthood is Beatification, which requires proof of a single miracle.<\/p>\n<p>Her biography has not one, but two miraculous medical events attributed to her intercession. But neither are considered proven by the Vatican due to a lack of medical records.<\/p>\n<p>A toddler exhibiting signs of encephalitis \u2014 specifically being non-verbal and exhibiting very low levels of physical activity \u2014 was taken to the Germantown grave of Mother Angeline in the early 2000s, according to Esposito.<\/p>\n<p>The child was placed on her tombstone and immediately started laughing and became animated with a newfound spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family said from then on, the child was different,\u201d Esposito explained. \u201cNow she is in her twenties and doing beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the medical records detailing the child\u2019s initial health diagnosis were not explicit enough for Vatican investigators.<\/p>\n<p>The grave of Mother Angeline, which was the site of one of her miraculous medical interventions in the 2000s.
