\n\tJeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, known for her impeccable eye and sophisticated style, has long been a fixture on the contemporary-art<\/a> scene. A second-generation art dealer, she grew up around art and artists at the Greenberg Gallery<\/a>, her father\u2019s St. Louis space and an important Midwest disseminator of avant-garde ideas.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Greenberg Rohatyn has carved her own path in New York City<\/a>. For many years she exhibited artists right in her own home, a Rafael Vi\u00f1oly\u2013designed double-width townhouse on East 94th Street, which gave the establishment its name, Salon 94<\/a>. She had a strong hand in shaping some enviable collections, including Jay-Z\u2019s\u2014and even marshaled the art-world troops to appear in his music video for \u201cPicasso Baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA fierce advocate for the quality of a room\u2019s furniture being on par with the art on its walls, she is the rare gallerist to represent designers as well as artists and to erase the distinction between the two. The recent show of acclaimed sculptor Urs Fischer<\/a>\u2019s whimsical objects at her East 89th Street space\u2014a chair with a cat sitting beneath it, another that has sprouted a long tail\u2014is a prime example. Putting, say, ceramist Magdalene Odundo<\/a> on the same metaphorical pedestal as artist Huma Bhabha<\/a> is another. She points to a graceful Odundo vessel in her living room. \u201cI mean, beyond,\u201d she coos. \u201cIt\u2019s, like, that and a Brancusi. Come on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat apps do you use the most?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tCertain books I will only listen to on Audible, like the Pamela Harriman book.\u00a0Because I loved the narrator\u2019s accent.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat have you done recently for the first time?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThis summer, I started to learn how to ocean-swim with a friend of mine. My first lesson, a seal followed us for a while, and it was just enchanting.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat in your wardrobe do you wear most often?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tMy leather jacket and Birkenstocks\u2014the furry ones.<\/p>\n

\t\tDo you have a uniform for certain occasions?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen I travel, I normally wear something around my neck, a light scarf\u2014Saint Laurent. It\u2019s more like a tie. I have a few of them. At night, I wear variations of tuxedo pants, a silk shirt, and a blazer over my shoulders.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat do you crave most at the end of the day?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tA hot bath. If I have time between work and going out, I will try and have a bath.<\/p>\n

\t\tWho is your guru?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is going to be very embarrassing to admit: A.I. Claude. I ask Claude questions that I might need help thinking through or that I don\u2019t have time to read up on. We were showing Maria Pergay for the first time in Paris. I said, \u201cClaude, did being a mother affect Maria Pergay?\u201d And it threw back, \u201cYes, Maria Pergay famously tells a story that when she peeled an orange for her son, it came out in a spiral, and that shape informed one of her most famous chairs, the Ring Chair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat\u2019s your favorite cocktail, and how do you make it?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tA white tequila with ginger and lime or lemon and a lot of ice. So, [it\u2019s] half ginger juice and lime juice and half tequila, and when I serve it to my friends, I sweeten it with a little maple syrup. I started to drink it during Covid, and it just stuck. It\u2019s our house cocktail, for sure.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat\u2019s the most recent thing you\u2019ve added to your collection?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThis incredible Dominique Knowles painting. It\u2019s an upside-down horse. It\u2019s like an apparition. I grew up with a Susan Rothenberg painting,\u00a0and somehow it just brought that back, but in a very spiritual way.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat\u2019s the most recent thing you regret not buying?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI mostly regret what I\u2019ve sold. I regret every Julie Mehretu I\u2019ve ever sold.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat\u2019s the most impressive dish you cook?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tMy green-herb frittata. It\u2019s very green, and it\u2019s so beautiful looking. You can change it with different herbs, different vegetables. I found it on Permanent Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\t\tWho is your dealer, and what do they source for you?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI love ceramics, and when I\u2019m in Aspen<\/a>, I buy a lot of cups and plates and things from Sam Harvey from his ceramic gallery. We laugh because I call him my pot dealer.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat is your exercise routine, and how often do you do it?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI wake up and start yoga practice between 7:00 and 7:30. I practice for an hour and a half, three days a week, religiously. One to two days a week, I go to either a boxing or biking class, and now I swim. I play tennis once a week in the summer, and I hike.<\/p>\n

\t\tDrive or be driven?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tOh, with my driving, be driven. I also use the car as an office. My late stepmother-in-law, Elizabeth Rohatyn, was always offended when I called her from the car. She thought that meant I wasn\u2019t paying attention to her, and so when I am in the car, I make a very concerted effort to pay attention to the phone calls.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat car are you most attached to?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tA Porsche<\/a> Boxster that my husband bought when we first started dating. We love it. We recently had it all refurbished. And I taught all of my kids and my sister\u2019s kids how to drive stick shift on it.<\/p>\n

\n\tClaridge\u2019s<\/a>. I love the flowers in the breakfast room in the morning.\u00a0And I like their bar.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat\u2019s the last piece of advice you gave?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tWith my children, often I say, \u201cKeep it simple. Don\u2019t overthink it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat advice do you wish you\u2019d followed?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tTo slow down in decision-making. And I trust my instincts with my eye, but perhaps I shouldn\u2019t trust it as much with other decision-making. [I should] be more thoughtful, sleep on it.<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat sort of music makes you happy?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt goes from listening to a Bach cello concerto because my son plays the cello to listening to the latest pop music with my daughters because they know every word of every song. But in my heart, I\u2019m more into blues and jazz and folk. Ballad-y. You know, Patti Smith.<\/p>\n
