STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School in St. George recently celebrated a powerful and inspiring event that showcased far more than a comedy performance.<\/p>\n
Students participated in a social-emotional and mental health-focused afterschool program rooted in the art of improvisation. These students took the stage on Dec. 12 at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Manhattan \u2014 performing alongside and learning from renowned comedians, including Chris Gethard, Jaime Rivera, and Shannon O\u2019Neill. <\/p>\n
The event highlighted student growth, courage, connection, and the critical role that the arts play in supporting mental health for young people.<\/p>\n
The performance was part of an innovative partnership with McKee High School and Laughing Together. The key purpose was to expand advocacy, awareness, and access to mental health supports for students through a low-impact, destigmatized, and engaging medium. <\/p>\n

Students met once a week, immersing themselves in the skills and principles of improv, like thinking and reacting in the moment, collaborating authentically, listening deeply, and supporting one another without judgment. Students learned how to manage anxiety, make quick decisions under pressure, and build confidence in their own voice.<\/p>\n
The culminating show brought together students, families, and school staff to witness this impact firsthand.<\/p>\n
For many students who were previously quiet, reserved, or introverted, this performance marked a personal milestone. Participants of the program also gained stronger peer connections, improved communication skills, and had a greater sense of belonging.<\/p>\n
This initiative underscored the importance of increasing arts-based mental health support in schools and empowering student voices.<\/p>\n
