With a countdown and a ceremonial snip, the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center is officially open in Central Brooklyn. The $141 million project, led by Council Member Farah Louis in partnership with the city\u2019s Department of Design and Construction and NYC Parks and Recreation, was announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and honors the legacy of Brooklyn-born trailblazer Shirley Chisholm.<\/p>\n
At the opening, Mayor Mamdani reflected on Chisholm\u2019s enduring message of inclusion. <\/p>\n
\u201cShirley Chisholm liked to say, \u2018If they don\u2019t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThanks to her work, there will be plenty of seats for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center is Central Brooklyn\u2019s first recreation facility of its kind, featuring a full gym, indoor swimming pool, dance studio, culinary kitchen, media lab and an indoor track overlooking a full basketball court. Neighbors say the center fills a long-standing gap in community resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been a lack of activities for children and adults,\u201d said participant Tawana King. \u201cWith the swimming, exercise and arts and crafts, it gives people a sense of belonging.\u201d<\/p>\n
After-school programs like sewing and chess are already drawing interest from local students, offering enrichment while paying tribute to the pioneering leader who inspired the space. <\/p>\n
\u201cI feel very honored to be part of the people giving reverence to Shirley Chisholm and honoring her name,\u201d said Christopher, a student.<\/p>\n
To celebrate the opening, the public can explore more than 50 programs at the center for free through Friday, allowing residents to sample classes before making any commitment. NYC Parks and Recreation Deputy Chief of Recreation Ronee Mattingly says visitors are encouraged to tour the facility and join demonstration classes during the trial period.<\/p>\n
