{"id":128199,"date":"2026-02-09T23:43:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T23:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/128199\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T23:43:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T23:43:26","slug":"news-12-brooklyn-leaking-hydrant-floods-several-blocks-in-bed-stuy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/128199\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Brooklyn | &#8216;Leaking hydrant&#8217; floods several blocks in Bed-Stuy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents in Bed-Stuy spent Monday cleaning up, after a fire hydrant flooded several streets.<\/p>\n<p>The DEP said the hydrant started leaking shortly after 8 a.m. near Lewis and DeKalb avenues.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Guterriez had to use cinderblocks to step out of her car and onto the curb, as the steady stream of water ran down her street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really, really horrible,\u201d said Guterriez. \u201cNothing has stopped. The water\u2019s still flowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For nearly seven hours, discolored water rushed through at least three blocks, which made it difficult for people to access cars and sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw people trying to cross over, so I put [a wooden] pallet over there,\u201d said Guterriez. \u201cAnd they were able to get over to that side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guterriez said, luckily, water did not get inside her home, but a few doors down, Frankie Rivera couldn\u2019t say the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy basement is already bad,\u201d said Rivera. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told News 12 that he is the porter for four buildings, as he tried to clear water and garbage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe garbage is floating all over the place,\u201d said Rivera.<\/p>\n<p>The DEP said it is assessing the damage.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday night, it was unknown exactly how many homes and businesses were impacted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Residents in Bed-Stuy spent Monday cleaning up, after a fire hydrant flooded several streets.
