Church<\/a> in Mariners Harbor at a special Saturday Mass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2K5TPMYPEFG2VEKZXGP47S6BJ4\">The dangerously frigid temperatures did not stop parishioners, family, friends, elected officials, and community leaders from joining Rev. Jack Soler for Mass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D5YUJTXE2ZBOTLGDHDUNKFYFO4\">During the Mass, Rev. Soler announced that Pope Leo XIV had sent an Apostolic Blessing to Giordano \u201con the occasion of the 70th anniversary of her religious profession.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Josephine Giordano's 70th anniversary as organist and choir master at St. Michael\u2019s R.C. I never imagined that stepping in to help would become my life\u2019s calling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FMFT36BMQVEV5HP2S2JV7JRDZ4\">Born and raised in Mariners Harbor, Giordano\u2019s musical journey began early. \u201cI started on the piano,\u201d she recalls. At just 4 years old, her father\u2019s boss noticed her talent and gifted the family an upright piano. By age 5, she was taking lessons, and by 11, she was under the tutelage of Rose Gippa, the church organist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XYMCNGLEPBCBPAWHJLSCIVQBT4\">\u201cRose really taught me the repertoire,\u201d Giordano said. \u201cShe even allowed me to play two hymns during the Mass to give me the taste of the priest on the altar and the formality of the Mass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Josephine Giordano's 70th anniversary as organist and choir master at St. Michael\u2019s R.C. (Owen Reiter for the Advance\/SILive.com)Owen Reiter<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6FKUSACVIRGBXGE7G3O2W2VHQ4\">At 17, she got her big break when Gippa moved to another church. \u201cIn addition to playing the organ, they needed someone to step in to help out with the children\u2019s choir, so I took charge of 30 children, eventually teaching them four-part harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E4UXH5YDQRDJDAZAW5UGZOGBII\">Her choir alumni include notable figures like Angelo \u201cButch\u201d Aponte, who later became a New York State assemblyman, and legendary Staten Island singer Al Lambert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DDENYOTU4JD2FOTXHF3RGHHQQU\">Entertainer, recording artist and radio personality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2022\/04\/its-not-work-its-a-calling-a-passion-educator-by-day-music-man-by-night-meet-vinnie-medugno.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2022\/04\/its-not-work-its-a-calling-a-passion-educator-by-day-music-man-by-night-meet-vinnie-medugno.html\">Vinnie Medugno<\/a> shared that, as a young boy, he learned to hear and sing harmonies by listening to Giordano during Mass. \u201cShe\u2019s been the soundtrack of my faith, and the faith of so many others who have passed through our great parish.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CWBCUASM7VAGFOFI7RPNS2NTNM\">Medugno went on to say, \u201cShe is the very fabric with which our church was built upon, and she remains the most senior member of St. Clement &#8211; St. Michael. We treasure her and are so thankful to the good Lord for his blessings upon her, which in turn blesses us.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HTTOTHJCNVEULDBZIRT355I6HY\">\u201cShe\u2019s my favorite thing about the parish! I especially enjoy and look forward to our \u2018gig\u2019 every Christmas Eve at 4 p.m., when I sing the vigil she plays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZVK2MABIJ5FLJLRVA7HT6XSCQU\">Among those on hand to honor her was District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, who said, \u201cFor 70 years, Josephine Giordano has blessed the ears and hearts of Staten Islanders with her talents as the organist of the St. Clement and St. Michael parish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HGKWKRUGY5BDFAUUBWUSH5O57M\">\u201cNot only is this Platinum Jubilee a momentous historical occasion, but it is a uniquely joyous moment, duly calling for celebration. Fossella marked the occasion by proclaiming Feb. 7, 2026, as \u201cJosephine Giordano Day\u201d on Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LZ45L55UC5DF7E5YYZDB4VZBVQ\">Fosella said, \u201cMariners Harbor is a special place with deep roots and family connections. I\u2019m here as a surrogate for my grandparents, who came from Italy, to say thank you for your beautiful service not just to this parish, but to Staten Island, and being a role model and an example for generations of people to just shine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CQUCV6XMQNHTDIHDKBW6QLSRVE\">Fossella drew a round of laughter when he explained that he took organ lessons when he was 7 years old. \u201cI used to come home and play and try to sing Italian songs for my grandmother, but I couldn\u2019t sing, so she had a beautiful way of saying, Vito, Vito, just play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2HBC5JBGQRF3JCJQJEIZ7PTXEU\">Fossella told Giordano, \u201cYou had a great saying in the church earlier, keep singing, so let\u2019s all keep singing together for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2S64M4SXW5FWRMCT2XD4VUUBRI\">While raising her family, Giordano furthered her education, taking courses in music composition at both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juilliard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.juilliard.edu\/\">The Juilliard School<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycago.org\/Organs\/NYC\/html\/GuilmantOrganSch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nycago.org\/Organs\/NYC\/html\/GuilmantOrganSch.html\">Guilmant Organ School<\/a>. She also spent about 20 years as a music teacher at St. Teresa\u2019s School in Castleton Corners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZHEYNOMO3VDYPJIGAT3C52A7AA\">Giordano\u2019s five daughters graduated from St. Teresa School. Her youngest daughter, Elena DiTringo, said, \u201cIt was a thrill having our mom as our music teacher. It was the best class of the day! Whenever we were out, and mom got noticed by former students, they would start singing one of the joyful songs that she taught. Her music was always fun, uplifting, and rhythmic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QJBXACRY6BHLXF2WLYMPADEGAU\">Her dedication to her craft is legendary. Last December, Giordano broke her wrist after slipping on the ice. Just one week later, on Dec. 24, she played Midnight Mass with her hand in a cast. On another occasion, when the organ failed during a confirmation Mass with the bishop present, she seamlessly led the choir a cappella through the entire service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DSPU6COKLVEE3PBHZEKCJNTATY\">After seven decades, Giordano\u2019s passion remains undimmed. \u201cI love it. I love what I do. I love being here,\u201d she said with enthusiasm. \u201cIt\u2019s not a drudgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7YNAQFDGVBADHKEGSKVGDB5FHI\">Despite occasional questions about retirement or training a successor, she is content to continue as long as possible.
