STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The United States\u2019 State Department is warning Americans to stay away from Niger. <\/p>\n

The West African nation has been given the highest travel advisory issuable by the department: \u201cLevel 4 \u2013 Do Not Travel.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Jan. 30, the State Department \u201cordered non-emergency government employees and their family members to leave Niger due to safety risks,\u201d the advisory detailed.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Those safety risks include terrorism, kidnapping, crime, unrest, and health concerns. <\/p>\n

\u201cTerrorists continue to plot attacks and use kidnapping for ransom as a business model. They target vulnerable groups and U.S. interests,\u201d the advisory cautioned. <\/p>\n

The latest kidnapping and terrorist attacks took place in the following areas of Niger, as listed in the advisory:<\/a><\/p>\n

NiameyThe Malian border area (Tillab\u00e9ri Region, Tri-Border Zone)The Diffa Region (Lake Chad Basin)Northern AgadezThe southern border corridor along the Niger-Benin oil pipeline<\/p>\n

That is why any remaining U.S. government employees left in the nation must \u201ctravel in armored vehicles for all movements\u201d in addition to abiding by \u201ca mandatory curfew.\u201d They cannot visit restaurants or any open-air markets. <\/p>\n

Other criminal activities, like \u201carmed robbery and residential break-ins\u201d can occur \u201cat any time.\u201d <\/p>\n

Unrest in the form of demonstrations \u201ccan be unpredictable,\u201d the advisory stated. Unlike the United States, the government in Niger \u201climits or does not authorize large gatherings. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, health care in Niger is limited. Ambulances, specific medicines, and trauma-related procedures are not broadly accessible. <\/p>\n
