Gov. Kathy Hochul <\/a>insisted Tuesday that the state has been more than generous with the city \u2014 ahead of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s trip to Albany to push the Big Apple\u2019s budget asks.<\/p>\n

The Gov. brushed off questions about whether she\u2019d give the city additional funding just one day before Mayor Mamdani is slated to travel to the state capital and ask for it himself in a legislative hearing known as Tin Cup Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say this, I already have,\u201d Hochul said when a reporter asked if she\u2019d bolster the city\u2019s mammoth budget \u2013 which Mamdani has warned is facing a $12 billion deficit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have stepped up without anybody having been in my ear because I know that the right thing to do is support New York City,\u201d she said, citing $1.7 billion in funding the state has committed to cover Mamdani\u2019s universal child care plan.<\/p>\n

Separately asked if she\u2019d budge on Mamdani\u2019s free bus push<\/a>, Hochul said \u201cwe\u2019re always having conversations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hochul took questions after she appeared with Mamdani at a press conference in Brooklyn to push her \u201cLet Them Build\u201d agenda aimed at speeding up new construction by cutting state environmental review process times. <\/p>\n

Mamdani is set to appear Wednesday at a legislative budget hearing informally known as \u201cTin Cup Day\u201d \u2014 when mayors across New York make their hometown pitches to state lawmakers.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner, who has committed to submitting a balanced preliminary budget plan by the Feb. 17 deadline, is expected to continue to push for tax hikes on the rich and for state funding increases for his lofty affordability agenda.<\/p>\n

But sources have suggested Hochul\u2019s bean counters are quietly fuming<\/a> over the mayor\u2019s public pleas, arguing that the $12 billion budget gap is an overestimate by the city. For instance Mamdani\u2019s budget only projects around $513 million in child care funding from the state, the sources claimed.<\/p>\n

Hochul has also been firm on not raising taxes on the state\u2019s wealthiest residents despite Mamdani\u2019s best efforts. <\/p>\n

But one expert said she may still concede to the new mayor, who endorsed her <\/a>for re-election last week, on certain projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe budget is a negotiating process and the state has its own fiscal challenges down the road,\u201d said Andrew Rein, president of the Citizens Budget Commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised at all if there is some meeting of the minds and she helps the city with some money for additional programs or you know, help the fiscal situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s office didn\u2019t return a request for comment.<\/p>\n
