\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOedipus Sets a House Record in Its Final Performances, and More From Last Week’s Broadway Grosses<\/p>\n

The production, written and directed by Robert Icke, played its final performance February 8 at Studio 54.<\/p>\n

Broadway’s\u00a0Oedipus<\/a>, which played its final performance at Studio 54 February 8, broke an all-time house record at the theatre in its final performance, bringing in $1,212,949 thanks to a sell-out crowd paying an average ticket price of $150. That total is far and away the highest of its entire run, and bests Studio 54’s former house record, which had belonged to\u00a0An Act of God<\/a> in August 2015. Oedipus, a transfer from an Olivier-winning bow in London’s West End, starred Mark Strong<\/a> and Lesley Manville<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Main Stem otherwise enjoyed a solid winter week, with Broadway Week’s two-for-one deal continuing to keep seats filled even during a lull in tourism. The 29 currently running shows brought in $30,170,014 with 94% of seats filled. Buying 256,752 tickets, theatregoers paid $117 on the average for their Broadway night out. That cumulative gross is lower than last week’s by about 5%, but that’s with two less shows, one of which (Mamma Mia!<\/a>) was almost always in that top five. With that in mind, that 5% decrease is actually a\u00a0stellar performance.<\/p>\n

Broadway Week continues through February 12, meaning next week’s grosses data will be the first to partially indicate\u00a0where we are without the benefit of that deal. This season so far is continuing to beat the same period of time from last season’s historic take, which leaves Broadway\u00a0in excellent shape as it heads\u00a0into a spring rush that is already gearing up to get started in earnest.<\/p>\n

The top five top grossers were mostly what have become familiar faces:\u00a0Harry Potter and the Cursed Child<\/a>,\u00a0Hamilton<\/a>,\u00a0Wicked<\/a>, and\u00a0The Lion King<\/a>.\u00a0Stranger Things: The First Shadow<\/a>, which has been seeing a marked increase in ticket sales since the debut of the Netflix series’ fifth and final season, took that fifth spot. This week, they are dark as they film the show onstage at the Marquis Theatre<\/a>, so someone else will have to take its place among the top grossers next week.<\/p>\n
