Samuels, the recently appointed chancellor of New York City Public Schools, visited New Dorp High School Tuesday evening as part of his \u201cOur Schools. Our Future: Conversations with the Chancellor,\u201d series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HN2P4H533NAGJDBTWMIUYUEKKA\">There, he spent time meeting with parents, staff and students to hear concerns they may have regarding the city\u2019s public school system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XUJWWN63FCFVCPVYTGZ5J43ME\">\u201cThis is critically important to me, hearing your perspectives \u2014 your ideas \u2014 in real time; not only tonight, but all the time,\u201d Samuels told more than 115 attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RHBLRGM4F5H2RP7GRQ5BBWHQGM\">Samuels, a father to two children himself, said he will be on the Island \u201call the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NWIIXNEK65APTKE2QLNBZQQEKE\">\u201cEach and every one of you brings a unique perspective to this conversation and it\u2019s a perspective that I am deeply, deeply honored to hear,\u201d he added. \u201cI am committed to listening and learning from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kamar Samuels visit to Staten Island on Feb. 10, 2026\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/OAOGUVNDMNABRJTECGWJX6KO2M.jpg\"  \/>Kamar H. Our Future: Conversations with the Chancellor,\u201d series.(Advance\/SILive.com | Luke Peteley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQELLAYNSNARZA7JO6NYABY5GE\">Samuels identified four major areas of discussion ahead of individual table discussions: safety, academic rigor, integration and family empowerment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QGERZWIDDVANPCHONJV4RHETVE\">After a brief welcome from the chancellor, tables consisting of parents and students engaged with senior school leadership, including Samuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HDH3ERDHFJHMLP3MHSDZEEADZM\">These tables, consisting of about 10 individuals each, picked one of the four areas of focus and identified concerns within that selected topic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ILTKTHP4UJCPXNDN6BMC7RWGMA\">Enhanced communication between school officials and those that they serve, whether they be students or parents, was one issue brought up many times. One student shared his desire for student voices to be heard and acknowledged by school leadership. Our Future: Conversations with the Chancellor,\u201d series.(Advance\/SILive.com | Luke Peteley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UMEBWYYD5NEWRAROXR76G5HAOM\">Amira Ammar, chief of staff for Assemblyman Michael Reilly and a mother of three children, told the Advance\/SILive.com that her table discussed the topic of family engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JS6T3T6CBBERNK7AIHMHXWHIAA\">Ammar gave \u201cmajor props\u201d to PS 55 in Eltingville, the school which two of her children attend, for doing an \u201cexcellent job\u201d engaging with families. She noted that a lot of schools do not emphasize such connection, which to her is \u201cinsanely important for parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OYCRUJTVXVC3PFE5YKM4DLCA4Q\">\u201cI praise the chancellor and his team for making such an effort,\u201d Ammar said. \u201cHe\u2019s been in this position for just about a little over a month and I\u2019ve already seen him several times on Staten Island, which is so encouraging. And, to be honest, I feel heard and I think that sentiment is shared with a lot of the people that I\u2019ve encountered tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"76IBKO3CWNE2HHMXGBIFHJDL64\">She said she hopes that the administration follows up on this feedback and implements change to move New York City Schools in a \u201cpositive direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VE5VPSNNVREPXPPFB4QD2JJ7OU\">The visit to New Dorp High School was the first of two Staten Island visits and the initial stop for the citywide community engagement series.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kamar Samuels visit to Staten Island on Feb. 10, 2026\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IA2FNSX3ZVFQVGCN5KETZIUEOU.jpg\"  \/>Kamar H. He is expected to meet with families at Curtis High School, 105 Hamilton Ave., St. George, at 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LALVBPE56VEWTPN5KX5MLZGRPQ\">\u201cThese conversations are about fundamentally changing how we make decisions by ensuring that those closest to our students have a real seat at the table,\u201d Samuels previously said. \u201cWhen families are true partners in the process, our schools become stronger, our policies become more effective, and our commitment to every child becomes meaningful. I look forward to these conversations and working together to build schools to reflect the hopes and needs of the communities they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FC2TL5P7SNBRDDWPF4Z3S4DLLA\">NYCPS will release a report based on feedback gathered during the roundtable discussions along with a long-term roadmap for the education system once the engagement series has concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The face of New York City Public Schools<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FKDKQ27H6RG7XMJNDPEGU5YZPU\">Samuels was appointed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani to head the largest school system in the U.S. earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GNGRVX7Q6REOTEIXRKWJFJ34FU\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/about-us\/leadership\/nycps-leadership-and-offices\/chancellor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/about-us\/leadership\/nycps-leadership-and-offices\/chancellor\">NYCPS website<\/a> touts Samuels as a \u201cveteran educator\u201d with over 20 years of experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"44KRVBVBXBFJZCSZCM7XZ5QNOA\">Born in Jamaica, Samuels attended Jamaica College in St. Andrew before attending Baruch College in New York City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7G7V7FRQRANVLYPC5AMHPY3W4\">He holds a bachelor of business administration and a master of science in educational leadership from Baruch College, a master of science in childhood education from Lehman College and New York State certifications as a school building leader and school district leader, according to Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZY4M5RJLT5APFEKHQ6EZAEBZQ4\">Before going into education, Samuels started off in finance. He previously worked as a finance manager for the NBA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RLM23SSFQBE75PEM3JDKYC7ODE\">Samuels began his career with NYC Public Schools through the NYC Teaching Fellows program, where he started off as an elementary school educator in the Bronx, serving at PS 41 and PS\/MS 194.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4JO6H3IJLFHUTFJ57WDXJYYQVU\">\u201cHis early classroom experiences shaped his belief that high expectations, meaningful support, and family partnership are essential to student success,\u201d his page on the Public Schools website states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KJHMODQOBZF2ZAN3TEP7R5PNNY\">Samuels became principal of the Bronx Writing Academy, MS 323, before taking on senior leadership roles in NYCPS central offices, including executive director of district school design and senior director of partnerships and initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XHZVPVVDDRFQPAPHAFZLCXKINM\">The chancellor also served as a deputy superintendent in Brooklyn and as a superintendent in Districts 13 and 3, located in Brooklyn and Manhattan, respectively. Samuels is credited for leading his district\u2019s implementation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/parents\/2024\/02\/nyc-reads-coming-to-staten-island-schools-5-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-curriculum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/parents\/2024\/02\/nyc-reads-coming-to-staten-island-schools-5-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-curriculum.html\">NYC Reads<\/a> \u2014 NYCPS\u2019 initiative to strengthen literacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QMKVHLZGFVGOFJBI6MQNCPZYG4\">He has also led \u201cschool integration efforts through admissions policies, mergers, rezoning, and culturally responsive educational practices, securing more than $10 million across Districts 13 and 3 to advance school integration initiatives,\u201d the NYCPS website said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Kamar H.
