Wagner\u2019s My Brother\u2019s Keeper program read Grace Byers\u2019s \u201cI Am Enough,\u201d a book that centers on self-love and also teaches confidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QMRVKROZUVFZPGY5F5ZV5HCQI4\">The reading was part of \u201cWorld Read Aloud Day,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/education\/2026\/02\/nyc-public-schools-celebrate-world-read-aloud-day-see-photos-from-staten-island-schools.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/education\/2026\/02\/nyc-public-schools-celebrate-world-read-aloud-day-see-photos-from-staten-island-schools.html\"> a global tradition<\/a> that began in New York City to encourage reading aloud, and is observed on the first Wednesday of February each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QFOMWJ4IMFBRXIUJJVZGDYACTQ\">Several community members participated in this year\u2019s event at PS 54, including children\u2019s book author Dr. Frances R. Curcio; Education and Youth Liaison Agnes McBeth; and Staten Island UFT Borough Representative Shawn Ramos. Kristine Garlisi of The Nicotra Group also joined, along with additional guest readers from the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LJWYCL3ZWRGBDD5L5K5BGJMZCM\">In addition to the reading of \u201cI Am Enough,\u201d third- and fifth-grade students gathered in the auditorium with children\u2019s book author Curcio for a Q&amp;A session about her book \u201cThe Case of Antonio Meucci &amp; The Telephone: Just the Facts.\u201d A book focused on the life of the Italian inventor and his creation of the telephone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GCJNKNEGRREHRNW6KYLZ2XSHHI\">Students asked Curcio questions about her book, her writing process and her upcoming projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TX7GXCF4YZFQPJFDTT3Z5DSKIQ\">Curcio said she was inspired to write the book because \u201cthere really wasn\u2019t a children\u2019s book available to help them understand the true inventor of the telephone.\u201d She hopes PS 54 students take away the opportunity to think deeply about history and ask questions that go beyond the text. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GORHPTIBFJGYZPYAUIWZHTSJ5U\">\u201cI\u2019m hoping they had the chance to ask questions that went beyond the book, and that motivates them to explore their own thinking, their beliefs, and try to connect with the situation that motivated Antonio to proceed. He could have given up, and he didn\u2019t,\u201d Curcio said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AYPGGQRJVNA6FJ4SB6GZ53T7IU\">In the lunchroom, third-grade students gathered with Ramos, who read \u201cBug in a Vacuum\u201d by M\u00e9lanie Watts, a book that explores the five stages of grief.
