New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday named Lisa\u00a0Gelobter, who served as the Department of Education\u2019s chief digital service officer during the second Obama administration,\u00a0to be the city\u2019s chief technology officer and commissioner of the Office of Technology and Innovation.<\/p>\n

Gelobter\u00a0will\u00a0oversee the city\u2019s technology infrastructure, cybersecurity\u00a0efforts\u00a0and data management initiatives, according to a news release<\/a>. The appointment of Gelobter, who fills a role left vacant by the resignation of Matt Fraser<\/a> at the end of former Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 term last year, signals a technical focus by the Mamdani administration on digital equity, public service and social impact.<\/p>\n

Mamdani said in the news release that Gelobter\u2019s \u201cdecades-long career as a computer scientist, innovator and entrepreneur has been defined by her commitment to leveraging technology for the public good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most recently, Gelobter\u00a0founded tEQuitable, a tech startup that\u00a0helps organizations\u00a0identify\u00a0and address systemic workplace culture issues like harassment, bias and discrimination, and\u00a0uses technology to make workplaces more\u00a0equitable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the Education Department, Gelobter focused\u00a0on improving access to government services and boosting outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations, a news release said.\u00a0She also worked at Black Entertainment Television Networks for five tears as an interim chief digital officer. <\/p>\n

In 2016, Fast Company named her<\/a> on a list of \u201cmost creative people\u201d in the business community. In 2019, Inc. Magazine named her<\/a> as one of 100 women building \u201cinnovative and ambitious\u201d businesses.<\/p>\n

Gelobter said in the news release she was \u201cdeeply honored\u201d to be appointed \u201cat a moment when technology is reshaping nearly every aspect of civic life.\u201d<\/p>\n
