STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 This weekend\u2019s nor\u2019easter is expected to sail into the beginning of the week, as a soggy Columbus Day will feature steady rain, gusty winds and coastal flooding concerns through Monday night before conditions improve later in the week, according to the National Weather Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The wet pattern began Sunday night with a 90% chance of precipitation and overnight lows around 55 degrees. <\/p>\n

Northeast winds were predicted to hit 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph, creating blustery conditions.<\/p>\n

A quarter and half inch of rain is expected to fall overnight.<\/p>\n

A wind advisory<\/a> and coastal flood warning<\/a> remain in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWidespread minor to moderate coastalflooding expected, with 1 1\/2 to 2 1\/2 [feet] of inundation aboveground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront [and shoreline],\u201d reads the coastal flood warning.<\/p>\n

More rain and wind gusts are also forecasted Monday, as the nor\u2019easter moves through the region. Less than an inch of rain is expected, with a high of 61 degrees.<\/p>\n

Coastal areas face particular challenges, with flooding expected during multiple high tide cycles as prolonged onshore flow from the storm combines with already elevated tides, according to the NWS forecast.<\/p>\n

Strong northeast winds will accompany the rain, reaching around 22 mph with gusts up to 36 mph during the day Monday.<\/p>\n

Relief is expected as the rain gradually tapers off Monday night, mainly ending before 2 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to around 55 degrees with north winds at 18 mph and gusts reaching 30 mph. An 80% chance of precipitation remains during this period, said the NWS, though rainfall amounts will be lighter: Between a tenth and quarter of an inch.<\/p>\n

Some lingering showers are possible Tuesday, before the storm system clears out from the area midweek.<\/p>\n
