Brown opened by citing the deaths of at least 18 New Yorkers during a recent severe winter storm, including unsheltered individuals exposed to freezing temperatures, demanding a simple yes-or-no confirmation. <\/p>\n
\u201cThese deaths had nothing to do with homeless encampments,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cThese were 18 New Yorkers who died.\u201d<\/p>\n
The questioning quickly shifted to piles of snow and rat-infested garbage left after the storm.<\/p>\n
Brown pressed, asking if the conditions still existed. Mamdani explained snow removal and garbage collection were ongoing. <\/p>\n
