{"id":130734,"date":"2026-02-12T00:49:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T00:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/130734\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T00:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T00:49:09","slug":"gustavo-rivera-discusses-north-county-hospital-bankruptcies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/130734\/","title":{"rendered":"Gustavo Rivera discusses North County hospital bankruptcies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bad news for residents of the North Country, especially St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties: The North Star Health Alliance announced Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/news\/2026\/02\/10\/north-country-health-system-filing-for-bankruptcy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it is filing for bankruptcy on behalf of itself and two North Country hospitals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bankruptcy underscores how precarious health care remains in New York\u2019s rural areas, especially the North Country.<\/p>\n<p>State Senate Health Committee Chair Gustavo Rivera briefly discussed the issue with Capital Tonight on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBankruptcy does not necessarily equal closure. [But] we are going to have to see about that particular situation,\u201d Rivera said. \u201cIt is a fact that there are many safety net institutions around the entire state that are impacted by the fact that they serve very needy people. In the current system, the way it works, unfortunately, is that it shortchanges these institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/nys-capital-tonight-time-graphic-promo960x540jpgjpg.jpeg\" class=\"hashed-image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-fifty\" alt=\"\" img-data-wrap-text=\"false\" img-data-editing=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s one of the reasons Rivera said he is a proponent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2025\/S3425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the New York Health Act,<\/a>\u00a0which is similar to Medicare for All, but for New York.<\/p>\n<p>Until the bill is passed, Rivera says, \u201cWe\u2019re just putting Band-Aids on the situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, many of these institutions, safety net institutions around the state, basically lose money every time somebody walks through the door because the rates that the state pays are far below the cost of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivera also discussed the coming impact of H.R. 1. Effective Jan. 1, 2027, states will be required to establish Medicaid community engagement requirements for certain individuals.
