BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) \u2014 The NYPD is still investigating a deadly dispute<\/a> in a Bronx subway station, and while the search continues for the gunman, the NYPD plans to change the way it tackles violent crime in one of the hardest-hit boroughs.<\/p>\n

Gun violence impacted the afternoon rush hour on Tuesday on a southbound platform at the 170th Street station.<\/p>\n

Police say a gunman shot a 41-year-old man after a dispute. The victim was found bleeding on the platform. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he died.<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s death marks the first fatal shooting in the subway this year.<\/p>\n

The shooting comes as the NYPD announced a major shift in the way it will handle violence in the Bronx. Commissioner Jessica Tisch says she will split the Bronx into two patrol boroughs and move 200 additional officers and supervisors to the borough.<\/p>\n

Last year, the Bronx accounted for more than one-third of all shooting incidents and shooting victims citywide, roughly three times as many as Queens and Manhattan, police said. The borough had more major crimes than Manhattan and Queens, and nearly the same as Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor too long, the Bronx has experienced more crime per capita than any other borough while operating under a structure that has not kept pace with the demands placed on it,\u201d Tisch said.<\/p>\n

The address comes as the NYPD announced the\u00a0fewest number of shooting incidents<\/a>, shooting victims, and murders for January. Murders were down 60% and shootings down 20%. Citywide, overall major crime was down 6.7%, according to the police department.<\/p>\n
