Read our initial story on the shooting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-kingsbridge-police-search-for-suspects-after-three-people-are-shot-one-teen-fatally\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters at the crime scene later on Wednesday night, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said in part, \u201cWe have too much violence among young adults. My heart goes out to the family and of course, we are also working with the school community, at the high school that this teenager attended, as well as the others and we\u2019re offering support and counseling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gibson continued, \u201cWe also have to make sure that we prevent any form of retaliation because I assure you that this shooting, the young man that lost his life\u2026everything is on social media and there are two sides. There\u2019s a side that could be celebrating this as a good thing and there\u2019s a side that\u2019s not celebrating and they\u2019re angry and when anger erupts, it is a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/W238_Shoot-6.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127999 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770950630_734_W238_Shoot-6-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"  \/><\/a>POLICE CARRY OUT a ballistics investigation following a fatal shooting on West 238th Street and Broadway in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx on Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 2026.\u00a0<br \/>Photo by David Greene<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cSo, we have to make sure that we have all hands on deck when it comes to the Kingsbridge community, as well as the school community where the teenagers attended, supporting the staff and the students at [inaudible], and really making sure that everyone is good, but this is not [inaudible \/ new for us?]. I want to remind folks that this is one shooting among so many that we face in The Bronx, and it\u2019s a call to action and attention, and a part of me needs to understand further what young people are going through that they engage in conflict and violence that ultimately turns deadly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The borough president went on to say that the situation was not acceptable. \u201cA young man lost his life tonight. A parent, parents were notified that their child did not return home safely as they left earlier this morning, and so, we have to, as parents, mourn the loss of this young man but we also have to say to ourselves, what more can we do? Incredible messengers all across our borough, people that see incidents of violence that are afraid to come forward\u2026 we have to make it easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cWe have to protect their identity and keep them safe. This is a working class community here in Kingsbridge. We have businesses here on 238th Street that have to close their doors [inaudible\/tonight?]. Patrons had to leave. Like, I\u2019m heartbroken. I\u2019m so upset that this had to happen in this fashion here\u2026three teenagers were shot and\u2026.[inaudible due to wind and subway]. So, as borough president, I\u2019m always working. I\u2019m always working. That is why I am here on scene tonight because my heart breaks as borough president but also, as someone who is raising children in my own family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cThis could be my son, right, and I also want to make sure that we do our part, so we have to have the conversations, we have to be in schools. We have to [inaudible\/build community?], we have to look at more resources, but we also have to look at how we can prevent these types of incidents from ever happening again. And it\u2019s sad to say that this is just one of so many that has occurred in this borough, and we know, unfortunately, that we may have another act of violence and that\u2019s what bothers me even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cJust yesterday, a man was <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/bronx\/person-critical-after-bronx-subway-shooting-nypd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shot<\/a> and killed on a subway platform in this borough; that is unacceptable. And so, I want to let the residents of The Bronx know that we are doing everything we can to protect the residents of this borough, and if it means we need to be [inaudible], then that\u2019s what we have to do, because everything has to be on the line, because everything is on the line. Our children, our friends, our older adults, innocent people are victims in this society that is plagued by violence, and it\u2019s happening right here in our borough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 12, Gibson added, \u201cI want to thank the NYPD, first responders, and emergency medical personnel for continuing to respond with care and compassion under these heartbreaking circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-12-034025.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-128012 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-12-034025.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"682\"  \/><\/a>MAJOR CRIME STATISTICS for The Bronx for the 28-day period ending Feb. 8, 2026, compared to last year (left), and year-to-date major crime statistics for The Bronx as of Feb. 8, 2026, compared to last year (right). \u00a0<br \/>Source: NYPD<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the borough president is no stranger to responding to tragedies involving people of all ages across The Bronx, but many of them teens and children. As reported, just in the last six months, a 15-year-old was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/baychester-two-sought-for-assault-on-15-year-old-teen-stabbed-aboard-mta-bus-bx38\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stabbed<\/a> aboard an MTA bus in Baychester in December 2025. The same month, a teen was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/belmont-teen-slashed-at-fordham-school-2nd-teen-charged\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashed<\/a> at a Fordham School and a second teen was charged.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, the community mourned a Bronx teen who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/family-friends-remember-bronx-teen-murdered-in-brooklyn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">murdered<\/a> in Brooklyn. In October 2025, a man was sought for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/van-cortlandt-park-man-sought-for-nonfatal-shooting-of-two-female-teenagers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nonfatal shooting<\/a> of two female teens in Van Cortlandt Park. In September 2025, two teens were sought after a 44-year-old woman was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/fordham-heights-44-year-old-woman-hospitalized-after-non-fatal-shooting-two-male-teens-sought\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hospitalized<\/a> following a Fordham Heights shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Westchester Square in late August 2025, four teens aged 13 to 15, were injured during a nonfatal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/westchester-square-four-teens-aged-13-to-15-injured-but-stable-after-shooting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shooting<\/a>. In Norwood, in early August, five people were arrested and four were charged following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-norwood-five-arrested-four-charged-with-murder-in-fatal-stabbing-of-14-year-old-in-oval\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatal stabbing<\/a> in the Williamsbridge Oval park of 14-year-old \u00c1ngel Miguel Mendoza Hern\u00e1ndez. A 17-year-old male teen was also stabbed during the same gang assault.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_8951.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-128039 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_8951.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\"  \/><\/a>NEW CAMERAS ARE seen being installed by the NYPD at the entrance to the Williamsbridge Oval park in Norwood Monday, Feb. 9, 2026.<br \/>Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Quaranta<\/p>\n<p>Around a week later, when young people gathered in the Oval as part of a healing circle to process their grief, they were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/family-of-angel-miguel-mendoza-hernandez-14-destroyed-as-local-youth-vow-to-protect-themselves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interrupted<\/a> by a group of young bikers, seemingly in an act of intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the stabbing underscored the need for the swift installation of requested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-norwood-oval-security-cameras-still-in-limbo-sen-rivera-asks-for-prioritization-after-teen-murder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">security cameras<\/a> at the Oval recreation center, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/norwood-councilman-dinowitz-assemblyman-dinowitz-call-for-more-security-in-oval\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>. These have since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/norwood-rivera-confirms-20-cameras-now-installed-at-williamsbridge-oval-rec-center\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">installed<\/a> inside and outside, and more cameras were also recently seen being installed by the NYPD at the entrance to the Oval on Feb. 9. Another NYPD camera had already been installed near the Oval basketball court last year. Read more on the incident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/family-of-angel-miguel-mendoza-hernandez-14-destroyed-as-local-youth-vow-to-protect-themselves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As also reported, one way of potentially saving lives after a violent incident is to train more people on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/lets-stop-the-bleed-together\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stop a bleed<\/a> fast, in the vital moments and seconds after a massive injury occurs, such as a stabbing or a gunshot wound, and before emergency services get to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gibson frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/man-disrupts-press-conference-ahead-of-anti-gun-violence-march\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partners<\/a> with Bronx District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bronxites-mark-gun-violence-awareness-month-as-may-sees-271-increase-in-shooting-victims\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darcel Clark<\/a> on different gun violence prevention efforts, like rallies, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bronx-da-hosts-first-annual-5k-run-walk-roll-against-gun-violence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>. Local youth centers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/mmcc-kids-rally-against-gun-violence-as-nonprofit-celebrates-its-80th-anniversary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mosholu Montefiore Community Center<\/a> have also marched against gun violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the 52nd Precinct has also taken steps to tackle the plague of gun violence by addressing it from other angles like quality-of-life issues in severely affected communities. Earlier this week, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/tisch-announces-division-of-bronx-into-two-patrol-boroughs-in-efforts-to-address-crime\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that the NYPD\u2019s Bronx borough command will be divided into Bronx North and Bronx South in early spring, mirroring the situation in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, in efforts to better address crime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-12-034251.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-128013 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-12-034251.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"696\"  \/><\/a>MAJOR CRIME STATISTICS for the 50th Precinct for the 28-day period ending Feb. 8 2026, compared to last year (left), and year-to-date major crime statistics for the 50th Precinct as of Feb. 8, 2026, compared to last year (right). This precinct covers some or all of Kingsbridge, Fieldston, Riverdale, Marble Hill, and Spuyten Duyvil.<br \/>Source: NYPD<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in terms of other Bronx messengers, as reported, several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/b-r-a-g-senior-vp-david-caba-honored-as-trailblazer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cure violence groups,<\/a>\u00a0including Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/fordham-heights-five-sought-in-shooting-next-to-cm-sanchezs-office-b-r-a-g-holds-rally\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">B.R.A.G.<\/a>), Release the Grip (RTG), Save our Streets (S.O.S.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/congress-approves-aocs-funding-request-for-jacobi-hospitals-cure-violence-program-among-others\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">others<\/a> actively and successfully work on an ongoing basis to prevent retaliation when shootings occur, particularly among gang members. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/b-r-a-g-honored-with-keys-to-city-of-new-york\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">B.R.A.G.<\/a> were recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/b-r-a-g-honored-with-keys-to-city-of-new-york\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">honored<\/a> again for their work, receiving the Key to the City of New York from former NYC Mayor Eric Adams. Read more about their work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bronx-rises-against-gun-violence-continues-summer-bbq-series-as-ytd-shootings-fall-v-2021\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/b-r-a-g-summer-bbqs-serve-hope-one-burger-at-a-time\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/b-r-a-g-st-barnabas-partner-for-new-youth-boxing-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bronx teens, themselves, are also working to address gun violence in their own way, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/teens-work-to-end-gun-violence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>. Additionally, the Bronx-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-angellyh-yambo-foundation-hosts-first-youth-gun-violence-prevention-summit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angellyh Yambo Foundation<\/a> is also working hard to curb the proliferation of ghost guns and, with Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15), has worked on the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/summer-of-violence-continues-as-gun-free-zone-law-introduced-in-memory-of-angellyh-yambo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angellyh Yambo Gun Free Zone Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Torres said of the latest shooting, \u201cHeartbroken by the senseless killing of 16-year-old Christopher Redding and the shooting of two other young people in Kingsbridge. The Bronx must be a place where kids feel safe walking home, not a place where violence cuts lives short. I urge anyone with information to come forward to law enforcement so there can be accountability and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to school safety, specifically, as reported, in 2022, one Bronx mom was left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bronx-mom-enraged-shaken-after-17-year-old-arrested-for-gun-possession-inside-east-harlem-school\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enraged and shaken<\/a> after a 17-year-old was arrested for gun possession inside a Harlem School her kids attended. Meanwhile some Bronx students, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/youth-group-community-rally-calling-to-free-schools-from-policing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sistas &amp; Brothas United<\/a>, the youth arm of local nonprofit, Northwest Bronx Community &amp; Clergy Coalition, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/norwood-neighbors-for-racial-justice-pen-open-letter-to-city-officials-calling-to-defund-nypd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some adults<\/a> often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/activists-to-drop-police-free-schools-banners-at-six-schools-on-education-mile\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rail against<\/a> the presence of metal detectors in schools, while other concerned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/doe-responds-to-nyc-school-safety-coalition-comments-following-bronx-school-slashing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parents<\/a> call for more security. I have been in contact with the NYPD, the school the murdered child attended, and the superintendent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cGuns in the hands of high school students should never be the reality, and we must put an end to this senseless violence. With a new mayoral administration, we have an opportunity to address this crisis once and for all. I can\u2019t even imagine what you must be thinking right now,\u201d Gibson told the young girl in relation to her reaction to the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gibson then asked her, \u201cAre you with your mom and dad?\u201d The young girl said she was not. \u201cOh, you\u2019re by yourself? How old are you?\u201d Gibson asked. \u201cTen,\u201d the young girl replied. Gibson then said, \u201c10? Ok, where do you live?\u201d The girl replied, \u201cJust right up there\u201d [on West 238th and Bailey]. The girl said she attended P.S. 30. \u201cOh ok, I know P.S. 30,\u201d Gibson said, \u201cDon\u2019t worry.
