{"id":133028,"date":"2026-02-13T23:08:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T23:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/133028\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T23:08:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T23:08:08","slug":"cabernet-franc-once-again-celebrated-as-new-yorks-flagship-red-grape-at-2026-tasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/133028\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabernet Franc once again celebrated as New York&#8217;s flagship red grape at 2026 tasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KZVGHF5FDFAM3P7QLMWN3G265E\">Cabernet Franc was once again the star of the show during a grand tasting at the Prince George Ballroom in Manhattan on Feb. 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DXFZRCR7MNATBIDBKXCDLRU6HE\">The gathering was held to help generate more interest and momentum in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabfrancforward.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cabfrancforward.com\">Cab Franc Forward<\/a> initiative, and according to organizers, drew more than 600 trade professionals, media, influencers, and consumers to celebrate New York\u2019s flagship red grape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LOG6ZFDS5BC6HM4CMAV5QOF73E\">The inaugural tasting, held in the same spot in New York City, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/12\/what-makes-cabernet-franc-new-yorks-most-celebrated-red-wine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/12\/what-makes-cabernet-franc-new-yorks-most-celebrated-red-wine.html\">took place on Feb. 4, 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FPIO65Y4LRE5LNXVN5KE6M24CQ\">Building a campaign around Cabernet Franc allows for the promotion of what is the state\u2019s most widely planted red grape (638 acres under vine), which is found in its three main wine regions \u2014 Finger Lakes, Long Island and Hudson Valley \u2014 and is recognizable, both in the tasting room and on a restaurant wine list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JHL2KZUVKVCA5DZ7WBCXWFLJQI\">Forty wineries from Long Island, the Hudson River Region, the Finger Lakes, and the Niagara Escarpment poured current releases and library selections, showcasing the breadth, balance, and age-worthiness that have made the grape a hit in the vineyard, the tasting room, and in many regional and national competitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2SEACMRYMJCBRFNK4TFLVAQZNM\">\u201cToday marks a meaningful milestone for New York wine,\u201d said Gabriella Macari, co-founder of Cab Franc Forward NY and the director of operations at <a href=\"https:\/\/macariwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/macariwines.com\/\">Macari Vineyards.<\/a> \u201cI have always believed that what we cultivate here deserves global recognition. Kathy Hochul noted that \u201cNew York is fortunate to have a robust and thriving wine industry \u2026 Cab Franc Forward NY demonstrates this leadership by celebrating New York\u2019s wine regions, family-owned farms, and multigenerational heritage.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OCKQMFWECZEQ5D2QU7MWU2DZ74\">Wine educator Kevin Zraly hosted a sold-out masterclass on the evolution of New York Cabernet Franc, joined by a panel that featured Keith Beavers of VinePair, Kimberly Prokoshyn of Dunn &amp; Sons, and Josh Nadel, MS of NoHo Hospitality. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LQFT6LS2ZZELNPS3YSKQEI4FKM\">Among those attending was Kareem Massoud, representing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paumanok.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.paumanok.com\/\">Paumanok Vineyards,<\/a> located in Aquebogue, Long Island. Massoud\u2019s parents began planting vines there in 1983 and then harvested their first crop in 1985. Massoud makes the wine for both wineries and has been the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/liwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/liwines.com\/\">Long Island Wine Country <\/a>for multiple years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y76CA62I35GQHP6CEQOIICS4NU\">Massoud said his parents first planted Cabernet Franc in 1986, and currently have 8 acres of it growing and are planning to put in another 3 acres this spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZUUJTIGDZNHLXN7INTJTMDGF5Y\">Another 7.5 acres of the grapes are growing at Palmer Vineyards, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4V2F2VBLVCHFBSXR4IKHTM6AY\">They are putting the grape to good use, in three varietal bottles \u2014 their standard Cabernet Franc, minimalist Cabernet Franc and Grand Vintage Cabernet Franc \u2014 and also use it in red blends such as their Assemblage, Festival Red and 40th Anniversary Special Edition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KTNNWYNHKNDU7JPUYAJUHTPSCU\">Paumanok\u2019s 2025 Dry Ros\u00e9 is 100% Cab Franc.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Paumanok Vineyards\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/JSK3ZNNTCVFGRIN5NYPOLYZGNM.jpg\"  \/>The Grand Vintage Cabernet Franc. It&#8217;s among a handful of Paumanok wines that feature Cab Franc.Paumanok Vineyards<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OCTVWS5EGNENJDEBOSGTSYPI7A\">Asked what he has liked about the grape and whether it\u2019s always been a favorite among guests there, Massoud said that it\u2019s a grape that\u2019s clearly at home on Long Island, especially in the vineyard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MHMNJAPB2JAOTOVJGQPKAZM6P4\">\u201cThe wines we make can sometimes be lighter in body, more delicate, more feminine. In a riper vintage, they will be bolder, but always well-structured for their weight, with beautiful red fruit and more subtle herbaceous notes,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cIt yields a versatile wine that is delicious on its own or with a range of foods. Try Paumanok Cabernet Franc with roast chicken, duck, game birds, hamburgers, meatloaf, pizza, sausage, hearty fish dishes, and goat or cheddar cheese. For vegetarian options, try grilled vegetables such as cabbage, bell peppers, and eggplant (try it with baba ghannouj) or zucchini.
