{"id":13323,"date":"2025-10-23T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/13323\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T11:21:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:21:10","slug":"ny-politicians-vow-action-against-ice-ask-nypd-to-arrest-agents-if-necessary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/13323\/","title":{"rendered":"NY politicians vow action against ICE, ask NYPD to arrest agents \u2018if necessary\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York elected officials on Wednesday vowed to fight back against federal immigration authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/10\/21\/ice-agents-arrest-street-vendors-along-canal-st-lower-manhattan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">targeting immigrant New Yorkers<\/a>, calling on the public to collect evidence and the NYPD to arrest hotheaded agents \u201cif necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pushback came a day after agents for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, some in armored vehicles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/10\/21\/ice-agents-arrest-street-vendors-along-canal-st-lower-manhattan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fanned out on Canal St. in lower Manhattan<\/a>, detaining five immigrants from West Africa and arresting four U.S. citizens among throngs of New Yorkers who spontaneously came upon the scene and chanted \u201cshame\u201d at the agents.<\/p>\n<p>State Attorney General Tish James appealed to New Yorkers <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/federal-actions-form\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who were there or who have otherwise witnessed or documented ICE activity<\/a>\u00a0to share their photos and videos with her office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation,\u201d James said in a statement. \u201cIf you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and assessing any violations of law. (AP Photo\/Jake Offenhartz)<\/p>\n<p>An online portal, <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/federal-actions-form\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which can be found through the AG\u2019s website<\/a>, asks witnesses to provide their contact information and details on what they physically witnessed, and agree to let the AG use any documents, photographs or videos provided in legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>At a press briefing later Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman, whose district includes the Canal St. area, said the four citizens detained at 26 Federal Plaza overnight were released about 30 minutes after his office notified media members he would hold a press conference outside the lower Manhattan facility.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman said Tuesday\u2019s bust represented an escalation by immigration authorities, and accused agents of targeting immigrants as a pretext to incite violence and hand the Trump administration an excuse to bring in the military.<\/p>\n<p>The congressman called on the NYPD, which was not involved in Tuesday\u2019s raid, to arrest ICE agents if they witness them using excessive force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to call on the NYPD to make sure that they are present for these raids,\u201d Goldman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf necessary, they also need to be prepared to arrest agents who are assaulting New Yorkers in violation of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goldman also said his office was overseeing the creation of a \u201crapid response task force\u201d that would assist people being targeted by ICE, though he did not share details of who would be on it or how it would meaningfully protect people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Federal agents walk down Lafayette Street as demonstrators follow along after an immigration sweep on Canal Street through Chinatown, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, in New York. (AP Photo\/Jake Offenhartz)<\/p>\n<p>The Canal St. thoroughfare, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/10\/07\/nyregion\/popular-flea-market-ordered-closed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which has for decades<\/a> teemed with vendors and tourists looking to buy knockoff designer goods and other wares at a discount on any given day, was uncharacteristically quiet Wednesday, nary a handbag seller in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Despite outrage from everyday New Yorkers and city and state politicians, Acting Director of ICE Todd Lyons on Wednesday said the agency would dramatically expand its activities in the five boroughs.
