The Daily News Union, NewsGuild of New York issued the following response yesterday as news broke of impending mass layoffs:<\/p>\n
“Alden Global Capital \u2014 the nation\u2019s most predatory newspaper owner \u2014 has again lived up to its reputation as the parasitic ‘destroyer of newspapers.’<\/p>\n
In what can only be described as a corporate-word-salad-maybe-even-AI-generated email, Alden\u2019s minions notified our union that they were swinging the ax yet again at New York\u2019s Hometown Paper.<\/p>\n
The blow: Our union will lose 28% of our members through these egregious layoffs.<\/p>\n
To be clear: These layoffs, which are the direct result of the repellent corporate greed that Alden Global Capital is known for, are being done without any concern for the future of The Daily News.<\/p>\n
From Michael Sheridan, our unit chair: \u201cThis latest move by Alden Global Capital to gut the staff of the New York Daily News, our city\u2019s hometown newspaper, is another sad reminder that the hedge fund and its owners have no interest in investing in local journalism, but instead want only to squeeze the paper and its staff dry in order to enrich themselves.
