The Manhattan-size interstellar dubbed comet 3I\/ATLAS<\/a> is producing a metal alloy never before witnessed in nature, an expert told The New York Post. 3I\/ATLAS<\/a> was first detected in July and is estimated to be roughly the size of Manhattan, approximately 5.6 kilometres in diameter, and weighs an astonishing 33 billion tons. The bizarre object was first photographed by the Hubble Telescope on July 21.<\/p>\n

Comet 3I\/ATLAS’s strange and unexplainable behaviour has left the scientists baffled but NASA has claimed that it poses no threat and will pass safely. New images of the mysterious object taken by the Keck II telescope in Hawaii in August was released recently and it was confirmed the interstellar flier is emitting a plume which contains four grams of nickel per second with no evidence of iron \u2014 unheard of in comets, the report says.<\/p>\n

The discovery produces an alloy known as nickel tetracarbonyl\u2014previously observed only in human-made processes, Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb<\/a> told The Post. \u201cThere is only one place where that is known to exist and that is in industrially produced nickel alloys,\u201d Loeb said. \u201cThis was never observed for any other object.\u201d

New images from a study conducted by researchers at the Keck Observatory suggest that this unusual nickel-producing phenomenon, while rare, occurs naturally. However, Harvard theoretical physicist and Center for Astrophysics director Avi Loeb disagrees with these findings.\u201cThis was a process that we can imagine only because it was used in industry,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cNever seen in comets before.” Another strange feature of the object coming into focus with more data is 3I\/ATLAS\u2019s lack of a cometary tail. \u201cWe usually see beautiful tails extending from the object away from the Sun, and in this case there was no evidence for such a tail,\u201d Loeb said.Instead, the Hubble Space Telescope image showed a 330-pounds-per-second stream of materials trailing towards the Sun. \u201cWhy are we seeing a jet pointed at the Sun? A stream of material in the direction of the Sun?\u201d Loeb wondered. The stream is primarily composed of carbon dioxide and water, with trace\u2014but detectable\u2014amounts of cyanide and nickel, and notably lacks iron, the American Astronomical Society reports.<\/p>\n

Astronomy enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly awaiting images captured by NASA\u2019s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The HiRISE camera snapped the photos between October 4 and 7, as the object passed within 12 million miles of Mars. <\/p>\n

However, the images have yet to be released to the public due to a government shutdown, which has left NASA\u2019s communications department furloughed.<\/p>\n

Loeb points to the object\u2019s unusual chemical composition and atypical behavior as potential signs of non-natural phenomena. <\/p>\n

Unlike typical comets, 3I\/ATLAS\u2019s gas jet is directed toward the Sun, and its precisely tuned orbit could indicate deliberate design. Loeb also suggested that NASA may not have released all available scientific data, sparking widespread online speculation.<\/p>\n
