STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Not much appears to be happening on the outside of Raising Cane\u2019s, but behind the scenes, the company is actively preparing for its Staten Island debut.<\/p>\n

The site at 2456 Richmond Avenue was approved for development by Community Board 3<\/a>, and while the property currently sits vacant, Raising Cane\u2019s has big plans for the location.<\/p>\n

Originally slated for a summer 2025 opening<\/a>, the project has now been pushed to 2027, according to current company estimates.<\/p>\n

While grand opening details haven\u2019t been finalized, the company typically launches with fanfare, giveaways, and community-focused celebrations.<\/p>\n

Over the summer, a Raising Cane\u2019s representative confirmed that the Staten Island project would not include a liquor license, would require a traffic study as mandated by the city, and indeed would feature a drive-thru.<\/p>\n

The site\u2014formerly home to Furniture To Go, a FedEx shipping center, and Coco Nails & Spa\u2014is located diagonally across from Trader Joe\u2019s and directly across from Wendy\u2019s. As of October 2025, the property remains vacant and overgrown.<\/p>\n

Raising Cane\u2019s began as a college project by founder Todd Graves, who opened the first location in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1996 after securing an SBA loan. The brand is known for its fresh, hand-battered chicken tenders and simple menu\u2014no heat lamps, just quality food made to order.<\/p>\n

The name comes from Graves\u2019 yellow Labrador, Raising Cane\u2014not the biblical phrase \u2018raising Cain.\u2019 The original name was going to be \u201cSockeye\u2019s,\u201d inspired by Graves\u2019 fishing days.<\/p>\n

The chain made its New York City debut in June 2023, opening an 8,000-square-foot flagship restaurant in Times Square\u2019s historic Paramount Building. That launch kicked off an ambitious expansion plan: 25 locations across NYC and surrounding areas. Today, Raising Cane\u2019s has nine NYC locations, including two in Brooklyn, and a flagship store in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Staten Island\u2019s slow rollouts<\/p>\n

Restaurant opening delays have become hard to ignore on Staten Island. Most recently, Wendy\u2019s in New Dorp, located at 1661 Hylan Blvd., took nearly two years to complete before finally opening\u2014despite being part of a well-established national chain. The delay was attributed to permitting issues.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Shake Shack,<\/a> also in New Dorp, was originally slated for an early October debut but is now scheduled to open on October 31.<\/p>\n

In Pleasant Plains, Ariana\u2019s Cucina<\/a> is preparing to open later this month at 6451 Amboy Rd., following a 2022 groundbreaking. The new business will be located across the street from a new Trader Joe\u2019s.<\/a><\/p>\n
