STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 New York City is under a weather alert Sunday evening through Monday morning, the New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) announced.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know how challenging the weather has been over the past several weeks for New Yorkers,\u201d Christina Farrell, the Acting NYCEM Commissioner, said in a press release. \u201cThankfully, this snow is not expected to be severe,<\/a> but it\u2019s still important to plan ahead and use caution on untreated roads and sidewalks. City agencies are monitoring conditions and will be ready to respond to any impacts. <\/p>\n

Snowfall is expected to start at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, with the heaviest precipitation anticipated between midnight and 5 a.m. Monday, the department said. <\/p>\n

Snow is forecast to taper off by around 8 a.m. Monday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a 70 to 75 percent chance of snow, with current projections indicating around 1 inch accumulation citywide,\u201d the department said. \u201cThere is also a low probability of localized totals reaching up to 2 inches.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the department, there will be no significant winds with this system and temperatures on Monday are forecast to rise into the low 40s.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers are advised by emergency management to allow for additional travel time overnight and during the Monday morning commute. <\/p>\n

\u201cResidents should use caution on untreated sidewalks, streets, and roadways, as conditions may be slippery,\u201d the department warned.<\/p>\n

Winter operations advisory<\/p>\n

A winter operations advisory will go into effect Sunday evening, The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced.<\/p>\n

This is the city\u2019s lower-level snow-combating notification.<\/a><\/p>\n

The department will deploy more than 700 salt spreaders and has hundreds of millions of pounds of salt on hand. Specialized bike lane spreaders are filled and ready, and the department will monitor salting using the new Bladerunner 2.0 tracking operation.<\/p>\n

Garbage collection is suspended Monday for Presidents\u2019 Day, and this weather is unlikely to cause additional delays, DSNY said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis winter weather is unlikely to substantially impact collection further, and residents with Monday collection should place it out Monday night for post-holiday service,\u201d the department said in a press statement. \u201cThe small number of residents who receive collection from alleyways have also been asked to place material curbside until Thursday due to ongoing snow operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s winter weather operations come as DSNY continues to melt the snow from January\u2019s winter storm. DSNY has melted more than 400 million pounds of snow at 13 melters in all 5 boroughs, according to the department. <\/p>\n

Helpful advice<\/p>\n

The department advised New Yorkers to use the following tips to stay safe during inclement winter weather: <\/p>\n

Wear warm layered clothing, hats, and sturdy boots. Have rock salt and shovels available.Stay indoors if possible. Use heating equipment safely. Never use stoves, ovens, kerosene heaters, or grills to heat your home. Do not leave space heater or electric blankets unattended.Take extra care outdoors to avoid slips and falls. Clear snow safely by shoveling slowly and taking breaks. Keep hydrants clear.Prevent carbon monoxide risks by clearing car tailpipes<\/a> and using detectors.<\/p>\n
