\nWhat you need to know about Spartan softball\u00a0
\n\u2022 Michigan State heads to North Carolina for a five-game slate at the Queen City Classic at Charlotte. \u00a0The Spartans will have two games each against No. 12\/14 Virginia Tech and the host 49ers, and will also take on Villanova.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u00a0MSU received votes in all four national polls this week after a 4-1 performance in Clearwater at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. MSU’s lone loss was to (RV) Auburn, with wins over No. 12\/13 Clemson, BYU, Longwood, and Pitt. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2022 MSU’s 4-1 mark matches the 2006, 2008, 2015, and 2016 teams \u2013 the most recent squads to post a season-opening weekend record of 4-1. \u00a0(The 2017 Spartans went 3-1). \u00a0The 1997 squad won seven straight to start the year before dropping its eighth game in extra innings. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u00a0The Spartan defense was on point, committing just six errors (.962 fielding pct.), compared to 11 for its five opponents. MSU also turned three double plays, the second-most of any Big Ten team and 22nd nationally.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u00a0Freshman Zoie Bernard<\/a> had herself a weekend in Clearwater in her collegiate debut. \u00a0She hit .412, with five of her seven base hits coming via three doubles and a pair of triples. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 \u00a0Sydney Doloszycki<\/a> had a team-best eight base hits last weekend, with one double. \u00a0She drove in four runs and scored three of her own, hitting .421. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 \u00a0Last Friday, Britain Beshears<\/a> hit one home run and Hannah Hawley<\/a> smacked two (one in each game v. BYU and Auburn). \u00a0The duo is tied with Kaitlyn Eveland ’19 for fifth all-time in school history with 25 career round-trippers.. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 \u00a0Beshears started all five games at 1B, recording four base hits and seven RBI (second on the team). \u00a0She drew four walks and hit .267. \u00a0Hawley hit .308 with a double, two homers, and seven RBI. \u00a0She delivered a team best .846 slugging percentage and was second in OBP (.474). \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 MSU posted a staff ERA of 2.80, throwing 35 innings and allowing just 14 earned runs. \u00a0The Spartan hurlers recorded 19 strikeouts and surrendered just seven extra-base hits. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u2022 \u00a0Autumn Behlke<\/a> threw a combined 11.1 innings last weekend and picked up two of MSU’s three wins. \u00a0She allowed 12 hits and struck out two, and earned victories over BYU and Pitt. \u00a0She tossed a staff-high 6.1 innings against the Panthers.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0\u2022 Jacey Schuler<\/a> posted a 1.50 ERA and scattered eight hits over 9.1 innings. \u00a0She is tied for the Big Ten lead in starts (3), which also ranks fifth nationally. \u00a0She did not allow an extra-base hit and struck out seven. \u00a0\u00a0
