A 21-year-old hiker from New Jersey died last week after she slipped off the trail near the summit of the tallest mountain in New York state, authorities said. <\/p>\n
The woman called 911 at 3:05 p.m. Thursday after she slid off the trail on Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks while with a dog, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said.<\/p>\n
Rangers responded with a snowmobile and a tracked utility task vehicle while State Police sent up a helicopter. <\/p>\n
After the rangers in the helicopter were unable to spot the hiker due to heavy cloud cover, one ranger was lowered to the ground near the Marcy Dam Outpost, officials said<\/p>\n
The ranger located the deceased hiker at 9:51 p.m. but weather conditions prevented the rangers from removing her body until the following morning.<\/p>\n
Rangers found the dog alive and rescued it. <\/p>\n
Mount Marcy in Keene, Essex County, has an elevation of 5,341 feet and is in the High Peaks Wilderness Area in Adirondack Park.<\/p>\n
