KEESEVILLE, N.Y. (WCAX) \u2014 If you felt the ground shake just before 8 p.m. Sunday, you weren\u2019t imagining things! A magnitude 2.0 earthquake centered near Keeseville sent tremors across the Adirondacks and through the Champlain Valley, with residents reporting minor shaking on both sides of Lake Champlain.<\/p>\n

The earthquake occurred at 7:50 p.m. Sunday at a depth of 7.4 kilometers (about 4.6 miles) beneath the surface. More than 90 people reported feeling the tremor and hearing rumbles to the USGS, with accounts coming from as far away as Chittenden County, Vermont. No damage has been reported from the event.<\/p>\n

This is the second notable earthquake to strike the North Country in recent months. The most recent earthquake prior to Sunday\u2019s event occurred on October 14, 2024, when a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Chazy, New York. The Adirondacks occasionally experience minor seismic activity, though significant earthquakes are rare in this part of New York.<\/p>\n

Why was it felt so widely?<\/p>\n

The East Coast has a very old and dense crust that makes the shaking of an earthquake feel stronger compared to the thinner and younger crust of the West Coast. The West Coast also has many unhealed fault lines due to frequent seismic activity which break up the shaking. <\/p>\n

Here on the East Coast, we also have fault lines, but they are ancient and have had time to heal. This means that the waves from the earthquake that shake the ground are able to travel farther. This allows the shaking to be felt farther from the earthquake than on the West Coast. <\/p>\n
